I am just curious if I wish to access a VPN network that I have established on home through my work computer, can the network administrator for my employer see that I am doing so. It is a windows computer at work and a mac computer at home.

I left some files at home, that I need to get, and don't really want to advertise the fact that I forgot them. As I am out of town, I don't really have any other way to get to the files.

Thanks

no, network admin wont see that. there may be logs created locally but you should be good. as long as you not vpn'ing through your work environment

They may see VPN traffic, but cannot see details if it is an IPSec tunnel.

Political Concern: Keep in mind that, if you get caught, you could see yourself in a lot more trouble than if you had just told someone that you forgot the file. Depending upon the VPN type and configuration--if you are split tunneling, you'll be opening a pipe to your company's internal network and network administrators (and IT security departments) really frown upon that. I'd recommend that you have a clear understanding of your organization's policies on this type of activity before proceeding.

Technical Concern: Unless the VPN is over http or https, there's a good chance that your organization's firewall will drop the non-web traffic (egress filtering).

I appreciate the information. I went ahead and confessed that i had forgotten the file.

I was told that yes they could detect it, and yes I would be disciplined... so, the solution was the network admin set it up, and had me get the file, and then advised me to change the vpn passwords on my home computer.

Thanks for the input.. guess it was better to be safe then sorry.
