VPN Application Help

Hi! I have a database application which will require the client PC to be located on a boat, with the database server located back on land. The boat already has a dial up ISP service (I think using Cingular). I was considering a VPN solution, but I really don't have the slightest idea where to start. I have begun to read some of the basic threads on this forum, which I will continue to do.

Any chance the boat could just dial-in to the server directly and logon directly - therefore bypassing hte need for VPN - much easier.
