Hello!

I have a problem

My configuration is as follows:

Pentium II 300 MHz, 128 MB SD-RAM
Win2k pro Service Pack 1, DirectX v. 8.0

Voodoo3 3000 AGP, 16 MB, 3dfx tools version 1.03
MetaByte WickedGL v. WGL1B31

The problem:

Before installing WickedGL I tried to get better graphics by simply changing (in Quake2-menu) the driver setting to "3dfx-openGL" or "default-openGL". That didn´t work. The computer rebooted without a single failure/error-message.

Then I installed the WickedGL-utility and thought that this would enable me to successfully change the settings for the driver property in the Video-menu in Quake2. But the computer still have the bad habit to reboot without a message.

The settings (in the Video-menu ) in Quake2 that work for me are the following:

driver: software
video mode: 800X600 (I can use higher, of course with the cost of a speed-loss when I play)

My questions:

What is the problem with changing the driver to "default-openGL" or "3dfx-openGL"?

Is DirectX 8.0 a problem together with the Voodoo3 3000?

Is WIN2K Pro SP1 a problem in itself?

I think of trying to install WIN98 on another HDD to test.

Well...

...I would be very grateful for an answer

Thanks in advance

Right Now I Don't quite know Why Quake 2 has this problem
But they symptoms you've described were similar to following problems:

1) Incompatibility in Win2k (coz it's happened more than
once believe me

2) I suggest you check your system for Heatups (but I
doubt it coz you said that It runs in software mode)
3) THe Biggest Culprit - Vga card Heating up put on some
sort of cooler (ie fan) and then see it still does it.

My reply isn't a solution to the problem directly-

Get a new mobo/CPU/video card from Newegg.

They run great specials off & on & have free shipping on a lot of their stuff.

3dfx cards were only marginally good at OpenGL because they were optimized for GLide drivers.

If you have GLide driver as an option, use it because you will get like double the framerates in games that have drivers.

Else, use the DirectX driver that should come for the card.

I think I have the DirectX 8 driver at home for my VooDoo3 2000 card.

You can check as they have 3rd party drivers for these cards (and the ones I have gotten worked well).

Good luck!
