So I have comcast High speed cable Internet. They provide the voip modem with 2 telephone lines on it and one rj-45. I was wondering since my old phone system is on the rj-11 jacks and analog is there a way to upgrade the phone system to ip phones using comcast service. They are putting an analog signal out on the rj-11's. All the adapters I see are for turning the rj-4 digital signal to analog so you can use the fax machine. Also on this modem what is that rj-45 connection for because when I try to hook up to the Internet with it it gives an ip address but wont let me connect to the Internet.

If I understand your thread correctly, Comcast provided you with their VOIP service for your home. You have an IAD type device they provided to you. The RJ45 is your data cable for your PC or router. If you want IP phones such as a Cisco IP phone or similar, you will need to install Call Manager Express yourself as I'm sure they do not provide this service. We are talking about 2 different types of phone mediums that they would need to deploy on their network for it to work.

OK thanks for the info. Just one more question if im using the linksys equipment for small businesses what hardware would I need in order to set all this up. On the cable modem I have rj-11 jacks for the phone line. So I guess im wondering what model adapter I would need from linksys in order to hookup their IP Phone's

Hi Mike,

I don't think your IP phones will work with they way you are describing your network. The RJ-11 jacks are for your standard analog phones and your IP phones talk digital such as SIP, SCCP or MGCP. We are talking about 2 different animals here. I am assuming you have linksys IP phones - You will need either a hosted IP PBX system to talk to these IP phones or some IP PBX system in your office. From there you are talking about a totally different ballgame to install or acquire IP PBX services.

Hmm ok thanks that isn't what I was looking for but now I know that the comcast system is not compatible with the ip phone systems. And wont waste money on makeing it work :)

Well depending on your phone system, you can upgrade the system to have IP phones and use your 2 analog lines. I've done plenty of Nortel IP phone system installs with analog lines. But no, you can't just plug in IP phones to work with your lines.

What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.

Oh bummer casue I really like the linksys ip phones. but with these analog lines coming in it makes things complicated. to bad linksys dosn't make a gatway or adapter modem box thingey to go from analog to digital so I can use these great phones. Though I do wonder if comcast has a voice modem that dosn't step it down to analog but keeps it at the digital level. Anyone got any thoughts on this one?
