I am currently doing an evaluation of VOIP vs current PBX(or upgrading) for a client and I've run into a stumbling block. While I have found plenty of info on the plus side of VOIP as well as security risks that could be a negative does anyone have specific information on performance problems with VOIP? I really need a both sides of the issue evaluation but aside from vague references to voice quality i can find nothing specific-can anyone help??
 
The main thing to keep in mind is that the performance of your Voip implementation is very dependent how well your network runs. Problems like delays, jitter and echo can be address with different QOS (quality of service) tools. If you looking to migrate to a VOIP environment you should consider an integration between your PBX and you Network (VOIP) which will enable you to migrate while you address the issues that may arise in putting in place VOIP network.
This book has good references and addresses many issues with Voice Over Ip
 
I too am looking at a 600 station PBX or VOIP install in the next 6 months for a new location we are building. My concerns are the same. I dont like the idea of a WIN2000 server for the Call MGR, another 2000 server for voicemail, music on hold, ACD/ Call center, etc. Before it is done we will have 5-7 WIN2000 servers that are targets for hackers, may restart randomly, etc. Anyone have input on these issues on a install of this sixe? (It is a given that a new install like this will warrent a LAN infrastructure to support IP traffic QOS)
 
That is incorrect, you Only need 2 Callmanager sevrvers for your cluster, which also does MOH, and depending on your ACD group sizes, you can run ICD on the callmanager servers.. And then 1 server for the Unity Voicemail..

As for hackers, thats why you put in access-lists to the voice vlan... Deny anyone access to that VLAN, and how can they get to your servers?

So depending on your size of ACD you have 3 to 4 Servers..

Don't worry about Win2k... I've put Callmanagers in that have been running for about a year now without hiccups.. and Have only been brought down for CCM update packages..

We need multiple MOH inputs for diff. trunk groups. I have been told a server is needed for the 10 inputs we need to manage.
 
Shouldn't need to, you can define the sources on the MOH sources, then define the audio source at the gateway.. Worse comes to worse you could throw an el cheapo Compaq DL320 server out there to strictly run MOH on.. could get that with Callmanager specs for under 2000 bucks easily. Then use the discs that you bought with the other servers to install the MOH server..
