We bought our new Prologix with R10 software to replace an old System 75 with about 50 analog extensions. The question has come up about running this switch over IP vice an exisiting analog Tie-Trunk card.

1. The switch has a C-LAN card (TN799DP) in it already. What would I need to do to hook this switch up to a CISCO 3660 router for transport across my ATM backbone to another CISCO router and a similar Prologix with R10 software? What kind of cards do I need in my CISCO 3660 routers? What kind of bandwidth is used on a per call basis?

2. We are currently only using analog phones with the system. Can we upgrade the system to use VOIP phones in the future?

3. I need to replace another System 75 that is only running 12 extensions at another site. They want to run VOIP at this location as well. Is there a cheap solution? Is peer to peer VOIP phones the way to go?

NOTE: We don't need anything fancy on any of the phones above. Just dial and talk. No voice mail, faxing, etc.

Well for definity, the best way is to IP enable it.. As for stuff for the Cisco side, all you need is a QoS capable IOS (anything 12.2.x preferred) a fast ethernet port, and your WAN acces... So pretty much what you already have..

For the definity you will have to purchase the IP Trunking RTU's and I would do DCS+ as well.. Card wise for the definity all you need is the TN799DP CLAN (which you have) and the TN2302 Media Processor board... That totally enabled the definity to do IP trunking and as well as IP phones (soft or hard)

as for question 3.. It really depends.. There is the new IP office system from avaya that is meant for small locations like that, but it doesn't have the full power of definity.

So your choices are open..

1. You will need the TN2302 Media Processor for IP trunking. No hardware is needed for the Cisco Routers, but you may want to administer QoS. As a estimate, I usually figure about 32Kbps bandwidth per call.

2. If you use IP trunking between PBXs, no special phones are needed. You can use your existing analog phones, digital phones, IP hardphones, or IP softphones.

3. The less expensive solution for this site is the IP Office. This is a new product offer from Avaya that supports IP trunking, digital, analog, and IP phones. It also has a built-in network hub.

I work for an Avaya business partner. If you like, visit our website at our sales associates can get more in-depth with a custom solution for you.

I spoke with one of your Reps and that IP Office fits the bill exactly. Thanks!

Keep in mind that you're running it over ATM, so there is even more overhead... As for that 32Kbps bandwidth statement, that is is a little more than needed.. G729 with overhead of HDLC, FRAME, or Ethernet is around 24Kbps.. Then if you wanted to, the ciscos support IP rtp header-compression, which would take a single call down to about 12Kbps.. Keep in mind those bandwidth calcuations don't reflect ATM. So depending on your codec choice, your WAN transport, and your compression methods, the bandwidth requirements change big time..

And since we're on the topic of resellers.. I work for Exp@nets, the largest national mid market telecom dealer..
Give us a shot to :p

Drayle, glad you got the info you needed.

LOL Buckweet. I have to say that I do get good info from your posts and alot of the posters here. Maybe I shouldn't have put the website here because I'd hate to see this forum turn into all the BPs fighting over customers.

But, if you browse to the Empire website, you'll see that Avaya awarded Empire Business Partner of the Year 2002. :p

(LOL, sorry, I could not resist)

Actually, I'd always encourage people to get quotes from multiple business partners.

All,

The US Navy is buying it so they have to get three quotes anyway. Will throw your hat into the ring BuckWeet.

If the US Navy is buying, both Buckweet and I will probably be trumped by Avaya Direct.

Heh, I personally won't get trumped, I'm not a sales person, heh.. I never deal with money, it just causes problems.. I'm just the grunt who implements the solutions hehe..

I hear ya brother. I'm much happier working on systems than I would be selling them.
