I'm considering tieing in multiple BCM 50's... some are 3.0 and rest 6.0. Will VoIP trunks work on all sofware? Any advantages conf. SIP over VoIP?

I know h.323 will work on all but I would get the MCDN keycode for CLID and networking between sites.

Thanks for the tips, appreciate it! I think the customer just wants to transfer calls back and forth.

You will still need keycodes for the trunks on BOTH systems, whether they are VoIP or SIP. If you purchase VoIP Trunk keycodes then BOTH VoIP and SIP will work. If you purchase SIP Trunk keycodes, they are cheaper, but only SIP Trunks will work....HOWEVER, I agree that the 3.0 needs to be upgraded to 6.0 for a couple of reasons. There are fixes in the 6.0 software load that addresses several things, (You can check the Avaya support page), and the 6.0 software is required to get tech support from Avaya...

Quick question here regarding licensing.

Thanks for the info about the VOIP license includes SIP licensing. I'm confused about how the licensing works. I currently have BCM50 on a pri circuit. Our contract will be up next year and am looking into switching to a SIP provider. I see there are 2 trunk licenses and even 8 trunk licenses. If I am only going to be using one SIP provider, is that one trunk or one trunk for out going and one trunk for incoming. Or if I want to be able to have 8 calls at once, is that 8 trunks? When investigating, SIP providers are calling it channel for each call I want at the same time. So is a Channel a trunk? In my head, a trunk is phone number (or circuits) and if you want 8 lines at once I need 8 numbers. In an IP connection, I can have many calls over the number and that's what channels refer to. If you can point to articles or literature that would help clear up this Novtel/Avaya mess in my head, I would appreciate it.

Ideally I would like to setup an SIP trunk before our pri contract expires and start running some extensions through the SIP provider to evaluate the call quality and see if this something I want to do. Switching out the phones to sip phones that connect directly to the SIP provider seems like a waste when my BCM50 works fine and is capable of doing so, with proper licensing.

1st: I think you probably should have started your own thread.
2nd: a PRI uses channels, same as SIP. Yes, a channel is a trunk (sort of, only not the same rollover as analogue lines). However many calls at once depends upon how many IP Trunks you have in your system.
3rd: you can get licenses for up to 12 IP Trunks (ie. up to 12 phone calls).
Something to consider if you already have a pri? One would assume you have a pri because you have more than 12 or 13 calls at a time. PRI's have 23 channels (23 calls that can be made at one time).

hope that helps.
