Is there an easy way to tell if I have SIP enabled on our PBX? We are testing VoIP calling with an Iphone App that says it can connect to our PBX. We have an option 11 that we have upgraded to a CS1000 in order to have 1140E VoIP phones. We also have Spectralink WVoLAN phones that connect via the Nortel Controller. The options on the Iphone App called SIP Phone ask for Outbound Proxy, Local Port, RTP Port, SIP Stun (Yes/No), and Codec. It also has a tab for SIP account information which includes options for Domain, Username/Password.

Anyone ever hooked up a non Nortel phone such as an LG or Cisco phone to a Nortel PBX using SIP?

you can atleast do SLT in ld 22 and look at the SIP Lics and see if any are considered used/in use

Looks like I dont have any. This may sound stupid but is this an actual card I have to put into the switch, or is it just something that has to be enabled?

It is a Protocol, like instead of H323. Lot of various SIP PKGs within Rls 5.5, and items relevant to SIP. (Sesion Initiated Protocol) for IP.

You need to set up the iPhone as a SIP endpointinthe NRS, configure SIP Trunks in the CS 1000 (you already see you need licencs for that) and then do the appropriate dial plan entries.

Check out this month's E911 Talk podcast at Nortel E911 Talk Podcast

Refer to my faq, its comprehensive guide to configuring 3rd party SIP as endpoint in NRS. Written specifically for XLite softphone, but the NRS config is the same regardless of what SIP device you are using.

faq798-7118

MAKE SURE YOU DO STEP 7 of PREREQ's or nothing will work correctly!!!

Funny thing is, the ONLY devices I couldn't get to work are the Nortel 1120/1140 SIP Firmware based phones.

Our vendor is telling us that CS1000 v4.5 will not work with SIP. They are saying that we would have to upgrade to 5.5 and that Nortel would only support a handful of SIP phones. Has anyone else been able to use SIP phones on 4.5 with soft-client phones like x-lite. The iphone has a SIP phone application that we were wanting to try and hook to our PBX.

Thanks

How can I tell what version NRS I am running?

I am trying to login to our NRS but it wont accept my level 1 or level 2 password. Is there a generic p/w that is installed on them?

The NRS does not use the same passwords as element manager. The default passwords are located in the documentation, but there is no guarantee at your site that they have not been changed.

In an enterprise VoIP network, the NRS must be running (at a minimum) the same release as the highest PBX. If you have a mixed network of 4.5, 5.0, and 5.5 CS1000 systems, then you must be running 5.5 on the NRS. If your NRS is co-resident on one of your Leader signaling servers, then it is the same software release as the Element Manager. If you can log into the CLI of the signaling server, the command is swVersionShow.

Ok I found our password. We are running NRS 4.5 so I am guessing we will have to upgrade in order to proceed.

Also if you are running multiple Sig. Servs and decide to set up an alternate NRS, the software will need to be the same on both or you'll have issues with propagation.

No you do NOT have to upgrade.

You will be installing SIP endpoints in the NRS only. The ONLY thing you program in the PBX is the DN in CDP that points to your SIP trunks.

What your vendor is refering to is in 5.5 the PBX itself actually supports SIP phones and requires licenses, just like any other phone. In 4.5/5.0 Only way to get SIP phones to work is to program the NRS per my faq.
