Hello All,
Any possible problems with installing and operating IP Phones over Cat 5e Shielded Cable? It has been mentioned to me that the phones may sound like they are in a tunnel or sound "Tinny", The users will be coming from a traditional PBX system over to the VOIP phones will they notice a differance anyway?

Cat5e UTP/STP will handle VoIP traffic. The quality of your voice transmission is based on the codec and quality of the VoIP hardware. You will get many responses on whether you can tell if your on a VoIP call. I say if setup correctly, you won't.

Just make sure that the jacks are shielded too, and the patch cords, and patch panel, then it needs to be bonded & grounded to the common building bond/ground for all your equipment and racks, etc.

Just using shielded cable without connecting the shield to the proper grounding point just makes it an antenna!!

Just wondering, why are they using shielded cable?

I wonder why the sheilded cable too,
We install a lot of VOIP solutions using either Cat5E or Cat6 with no problem, nor the added expense of a sheilded system.
Good Luck,

Has been in the cabling business for about twenty years and is now the Sr PM for a cabling company located in the Los Angeles area.
Also a General Class Amatuer Radio Operator.

Yep, I am with everyone else...why the shielding? Unless you are installing these in a very high RFI area you should not need shielding. Are these going into a regular office environment? Cat5E will work fine and will not affect the call quality.

I was miserable, then someone told me "smile and be happy, things could be worse". So I smiled and was happy...and they were right, things were worse!

Hello,
Thanks for all your replys, we are installaing shelded cable due to the high RF activity within the building,ex: internal cell phone transmitters, Broadcast transmitters, etc. Today I used an Avaya One-X IP phone at another site and it did have a "Hollow" Echo side tone to the transmission.
Thanks Again.
