Hi guy's,
Has anyone out there had echo using voip on ip hardphones (4606,4612,/softphones on Definity v9 & v10 ?? The echo problems are on internal, external, incoming, outgoing calls. We also have 6408d+ phones which are no problem.Echo occurs anytime/any place.Have done echo cancelling, customer has upgraded all routers/switches etc on fibre backbone but problem still there. This has been going on since may 2002 when it was installed.Any ideas as whatever hair I have not pulled out as gotten grey.
Excellent site guy's,I wish I would have discovered sooner.

Have you upgraded to the latest firmware on the phones, latest firmware on CLAN and Medpro's Also check out your DS1 echo cancellation is turned on...

Check those first, then lets go from there..

Sir,
I have upgraded all firmware and have the latest hardware versions (from avaya) and have DS1 echo-c switched on.The problem never seems to stay on one particular phone but gives the impression of "floating about".It is not particular to any switch, server or router and is hard to pin down.
We have varied the codecs over the previous 12 months for hardphones and softphones and tried various good quality (avaya recommended) headsets for the softphones.
We have 3 medpros & 3 clans which we have changed and upgraded over the year.
Customer has changed switches (4 off) to 3COM Superstack-3824 boxes to try alleviate problems.
Believe me,all help & ideas are much appreciated.

Okay, next thing, do they have the handset turned all the way up? Also, there have been some known problems with CLAN and Medpros being used on 3com switches. Does the echo ever happen calling from IP phone to IP phone, do you have direct IP to IP audio turned on? Just trying to see if its always causing echo going from IP to switch, or if it happens IP to IP..

Guys, the echo occurs ip-ip phone & when the calls are ip direct. We have done some testing with hairpinning "off" but the problem still there. We have also monitored the lan for any broadcast messages or any form of high/unusual traffic but it's drawn a blank so far. It's a strange one this, but there must be users out there who use voip and have no problems (or is there ???).

Well, this being on a LAN there shouldn't be any latency problems. Make sure they don't have their handsets blaring, that can cause it.. Other than that, I have yet to experience echo problems. Sorry..

We have about 100 IP phones and also use G700 and S8300 units - with occasional echo problems on hairpinned calls. However, believe it or not, when we upgraded our system and installed the latest firmware release on our CLAN and Medpro cards we had echo on all IP phones. We had to revert to an older firmware release. Avaya didn't have any explanations.

We have the same issue of echoing since upgrading a R10 to Cm 1.3, now almost every IP Phone on the system will randomly experience echo on all external calls. However we have found by changing the Ds1 Echo Cancellation to 'n' on the PRI trunk group we have resolved the majority of the Echo heard when making outbound calls however we are still experiencing echo on ~5% of calls on:
a) IP Phone to IP Phone
b) IP Phone to Digital Phone
c) IP Phone to External Party

Thank you,

BuckWeet, you referenced issues between 3com and Avaya Medpro/Clan, can you elaborate on that?

Well I can't elaborate a whole lot, AVAYA tier III has told me this, and they haven't mentioned any actual issues, i just know there can be some negotiation issues, and even issues when you hard code the ports..

I also had problems with that on other vendors switches. Just moved to Avaya Cajun switches and seems to be all right

I have not had problems with Avaya switches, however have had issues with MEDPRO's on Cisco switches, particularly Cisco 65xx 10/100/1000 Mb cards.

Thank you,

Just to let everyone know, the issue with the Echo on the CM 1.3 Definity CSi was completely resolved by changing the Echo Cancellation from 'y' to 'n' on the Trunk form for the PRI, during an upgrade from R10 to CM 1.3 this resulted IP phones that used the PRI getting random echo on 80% of the calls over PRI. Something during the upgrade process resulted in this as the client never had these issues before the upgrade.

I just thought I would let everyone know

Thank you,
