Hello. I am looking for some advice on how to troubleshoot a VOIP issue.

I have two G3Rs linked together with a VOIP DCS trunk. Callers are experiencing intermittent voice quality problems when using this trunk for 4 digit dialing between sites. The quality is similar to a bad cell phone connection. There are no alarms or errors on the G3. There haven’t been any configuration changes.

The data network doesn’t have QoS enabled, but there is plenty of bandwidth and no variant speeds on the network. The network department has checked their equipment and I’ve checked everything I can think of in the PBX.

What would be a good test to determine if the problem is with the PBX or the data network?

Do some ping tests, also make sure that you have the latest firmware on the Prowler boards.. It could be a QoS problem.. The packets might be getting put into buffer Ques so long that by the time they get to the remote site it might be discarded.. There are so many variables that could be causing it..

We need more info to help, how is the remote site connected? What gear are you connecting to, what are the routers?

Hi
It does sound like you are experiencing packet loss on this H.323 trunk, I think depending on the S/W revision is you status the station that is connected across this link on the 3rd page or so, it shows the packet loss?

It needs to be under 20ms according to the Avaya white paper I have.

Good luck..

CableMonkey,

Verify the firmware version of your CLAN and MEDPRO cards. We had a similar problem and Avaya pointed us to the latest firmware versions of both as a fix.

Good Luck, WHCARon
