Voicemail to Email using Gmail.... is the end near? 10

I have successfully setup voicemail to email many times, including using Gmail. However, while attempting to do the same, yesterday, I came across the following statement from Google. This was as I was turning on the feature to enable "less secure apps" to send out mail.



"Less secure apps & your Google Account
To help keep your account secure, starting May 30, 2022, ​​Google will no longer support the use of third-party apps or devices which ask you to sign in to your Google Account using only your username and password.

Please note this deadline does not apply to Google Workspace or Google Cloud Identity customers. The enforcement date for these customers will be announced on the Workspace blog at a later date.

Special Note on Apple Device Sign-Ins. Users who have not recently signed into their Google Account using only username and password will be able to only make new sign in attempts using the Google account type starting from February 28, 2022. Existing users may continue to sign into their Google Account using their username and password until May 30, 2022.
If an app or site doesn’t meet our security standards, Google might block anyone who’s trying to sign in to your account from it. Less secure apps can make it easier for hackers to get in to your account, so blocking sign-ins from these apps helps keep your account safe."


So... of course, I am in search of a reliable alternative. About 90% of my customers use embedded voicemail. I am considering using our own in-house email server for this, but I'm not sure I want that liability. We are also thinking about moving our own email to a web service.

Would any of you be willing to share what you are doing (other than gmail) and/or giving me your two cents? (I'm good for it)

It seems to depend on the type of Google account a user has. I have set up VM to Email on user accounts where they have enabled 2-Step Verification and then generated an App password, and I have also set it up by simply enabling Less Secure Apps on their account and then used their Google username and password. It seems that the notice provided above only refers to the latter.

I just checked my personal Google account, which is configured for 2-Step Verification and App passwords and no warning notice exists.


 
I try to do that when the customer has their own server. However, most of my customers do not. Most either use gmail, or are using Google's business email service (aka gmail, by another name). These are the ones that are going to stop working.

 
Same we have always told customers that had issues getting their own provider's email to work to simply create a new free gmail account, turn on less secure apps, and it works great. Sucks but it has been writing on the wall for a while now.

The truth is just an excuse for lack of imagination.
 
Thanks - I saw this recently but haven't thought about the implications yet.

Outlook.com is a popular free e-mail service so would that work? GMX has been mentioned here in the past.
 
I haven't had any issues with outlook.com if that helps...

Can't believe I am going back to Yahoo mail but it works.
 
I use gmx for some customers it is 1&1 that is behind, so, all OK.
What is cool, i that you can have some aliases on the same mailbox.
Other solution, is buy a domain name.
For a few bucks a year, you can get a domain name, a SMTP server, and a free email with @yourdomainame.
I got a nice 4 signs .fr :)

 
outlook.com may go the route that office 365 went and only allow TLS 1.2 soon which then means no old PC's and no IPO embedded systems. So as nice as it sounds for now it might be easier to pay for an email service and send all emails there.
We use SMTP2GO and pay them to relay for a lot of our customers, that will be working until some technology kills it but hopefully by then I am 6 Ft under and it becomes someone else's issue.
