We had a situation in our NEC NEAX where the hard drive in the voicemail system died. Now, keeping in mind you can buy a raw hard drive for about $200, it still cost me $2500 for NEC to replace the unit. Well, it's the last time I'm spending THAT money.

I bought a drive duplicator. When I got the new system, I unplugged the drive, and duplicated it off to another drive. Of course, if it crashes again, messages will be lost and I'll have to set up any other boxes since my last backup, but I'll be able to buy another drive (it's just a laptop drive running DOS with NEC's voicemail system), and save myself about $2300.

Part of any good disaster recovery plan; I'll get the system up a lot quicker than pulling it out, sending it to NEC, and paying another $2500.

Thats an awesome plan. Wish I could have done something like that for one of my 2400ICS CPUs that crashed last week. $6000 to replace that badboy! Luckily the hard drive was still in good shape.

we have an active voice repartee 8-port voicemail system running on a dedicated machine and connected to our neax 2000 ips via mci. i believe the nec voicemail IS the active voice product as nec bought active voice. on the voicemail system we run OS2 (rock solid) and we simply put a nic card in that box and my voicemail tech setup a script to copy all the voicemail settings and messages to a mapped network drive each night. this is a very fast backup (minutes) and very cheap solution.
