Hi everyone,

Good day!
I have three G450 media gateways on CM R10.1 ,
Users report some issues including poping noise, dropped calls and alarm sound during calling.

I have confirmed some information:

1.The issues only happened on internal calling and the stations are in the different G450s.
2.All G450s have the newest FW.
3.All G450s port is set to 100MB Duplex Full without negotiation.
4.Switch ports are set to 100MB Duplex Full Force.
5.All G450s have the same codec setting in CM.
6.All G450s Jitter Buffer is set to 180ms.

Can anyone give me some directions? Thank you very much!

Don't know r10 but assume it still has call shuffling and direct media, is that enabled?

Hi biglebowski,

There are only analog and digital stations on this system.
So I don't think the call shuffling and direct media options cause the mentioned issue.

G450 firmware version used and what HW vintage version 1, 2,3, or 4?

Also, what release was it running prior?

G450 Gateways running a release prior to Release 7.1.2 Build 39.5.0 MUST first install Release
7.1.0.5 (Build 38.21.03 or Build 38.21.33) or newer 38.xx.yy release before installing Release
10.1.x.y.

Hi avayaguy23,

FW:g450v4_sw_42_8_0
HW:4

Prior version : 41.34.1
Current version : 42.8.0

I find on support.avaya.com that 42.8.0 is the newest g450v4 FW for CM R10 and 41.x is for CM R8.

Users report this issue doesn't happen often.

Occurs most during periods of heavy calling traffic.

I don't know whether module(MM716,MM717) FW will affect voice quality so I keep it on the original version.

Maybe I should upgrade them?

I would recommend checking what firmware version your MM716 and MM717 are currently at:

Analog MM716 Hardware version Less than 20 release firmware 106 May 8, 2019
Analog MM716 Hardware version 20 or greater release firmware 114 April 11, 2022
DCP MM717 Hardware version All release firmware 15 July 15, 2013

I would suggest reseating the memory chips on those gateways. Those act as the DSP resources for transposing the TDM device calls to ip based and back.

Regardless of the set type (IP, digital or analog), would you describe the noise as "Digital" - robotic voice, pops; or "Analog" - static, hissing, crackling?
Each type of voice quality issue requires different techniques.

Analog issues can often be attributed to handsets or electrical interference on the station wiring for analog stations.

Digital issues can sometimes be electrical interference or bad connections on the wiring but often are a result of the network. If the issue happens during peak calling times then I would look at the network.

Are the gateways in different physical locations? What is type of network (Fiber, VPN over Internet, etc.) and what is the bandwidth?

Are the gateways in different network regions? If so, check the network regions (display IP-network-region x) and confirm the IP-Codec used between regions. Is there an intervening region?
You may see your ip-network-connections something like this:
Code:
display ip-network-region 1 Page 4 of 20

Code:
list ip-codec-set

                                IP MEDIA PARAMETERS

Codec Codec 1 Codec 2 Codec 3 Codec 4 Codec 5
Set

  1 G.711MU G.729
  2 G.729 G.711MU

In this example, calls within a physical location (direct connected regions) use G.711MU while calls in different locations use G.729 and an intervening region. G.729 uses smaller packets and is more compressed so it uses less bandwidth. That could help alleviate any network bandwidth issues.

Set up a call between endpoints, one on each gateway and run status station X. Page 4 will show you talkpath information.

Code:
status station 7000 Page 4 of 5
SRC PORT TO DEST PORT TALKPATH
src port: 040V206
040V206:TX:ctxID:224
040V011:RX:ctxID:224:TX:10.10.2.44:2054/g711u/20ms
004V020:RX:10.10.52.153:2054/g711u/20ms:TX:ctxID:143
004V205:RX:ctxID:143

dst port: 004V205

You should see both gateways in the conversation. In this example, the station is on MG40 and connected to a PRI in MG4 but your station-to-station call should be similar. You can confirm the call is using the correct codec and such.

These are only a couple of points to help you troubleshoot. I hope the help.
