Voice Mail VS 5.0 failure?

I think I might have been bit by an unscrupulous Ebayer selling me some faulty equipment...

I replaced our Mail VS 1.0 unit with a Mail VS 5.0 unit. The first day it powered up fine and I was able to access the attendant. I went on home and figured I'd go about programming it the next day. Since then, I have not been able to access the attendant -- I just get a busy signal when trying to go to the Voicemail.

I have tried rebooting the system several times -- I can hear the hard drive working and the light will stay on steady (after going on and off several times). I have also tried changing the position of the module to different places in the 5-slot carrier and changing the corresponding Hunt Group 7 extensions.

Presently I have an ACS 4.0 module in the center slot with a 308EC module in the 1st slot. The VS 5.0 is in the second slot with extensions 30 & 31 assigned to Hunt Group 7.

Any ideas on what would make this behave this way -- short of being sold a bill of goods? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had a Partner Mail VS R4.1 experience similar symptoms.

The hard drive actually became quite noisy and the auto attendant didn't consistently answer incoming calls after the specified number of rings.

Ended up being a failed hard drive.

Upgraded to a Partner Messaging R6.0 and have had no problems since.

Doublecheck your hunt group 7 programming. If correct then it most likely needs a hard drive replacement.

Okay -- that's what I was afraid of. Now, for the cost question -- how much to replace the hard drive? Is this something I can do myself or do I need to have it serviced?

It's not hard to do. Just 4 screws hold the hard drive to the motherboard. Hopefully you backed up programming to the PC card.

No backup because I hadn't programmed the unit yet. There's no way to back up the vs 1.0 so I'll have to start from scratch.

Okay -- I have another question about the VS 5.0 . . .

This unit came with the 2-port backup card. I understand that the VS 5.0 already has 2 ports configured. Is the function of the 2-port card primarily for backup? Or is it necessary for the function of the VS 5.0 as well? Or does it add a second 2 ports to make it a 4-port??? (which I doubt).

Partner Mail VS modules will operate without port module cards inserted, but you won't be able to backup & restore any voicemail settings. The module, operated without a card, will give you 2 voicemail ports. There is a 4 port access card available.
