I have several questions regarding voice logging systems.
All our systems are CS1000's Rls 4.5. Our security department wants calls to be logged because we've been having some bomb threats etc. They want to log calls.
How do we go about doing this? Is there a particular product suited for this purpose and how is it connected to the PBX?
Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

What the Security dept wants and what is Legal, may be two different things. First lets find out what you really want/need. The system can be programmed to output every phone number for every call that comes in (CDR). there is also a feature called Malicious Trace, that when a KEY is pressed the Caller Info is locked at the Telco and they can give that info to the Police. There are also Voice recorders that can be activated with the pust of a button.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

They want Caller ID coming into the main office, so I'm working on getting PRI trunks into the system.

Let's say someone calls our pilot number 658-xxxx from anywhere in our country, how can we determine what number made this call.

Let's say someone from within the organization seizes a trunk and dials the pilot number 658-xxxx and makes a threat, how do we trace it.

Currently we are only collecting CDR for external calls - Billing purposes only.

If you have PRI you can get CLID of caller. You will need to setup CLID Tables in your system and and if your going to have DID you should try to get a range that already matches you Ext numbers and each DN on Key 0 would have a CLID of 0 by default so when they dialout it will send the CLID. Depenging how your system is setup you could prevent a phone from dialing out and back in again.

If you are getting bomb threats, it will take Homeland Security about 60 seconds to figure out who made the call to you...it's that simple.

Every call made through every LEC has a record that can be retrieved as fast as you can say the word bomb.

We had a bomb threat at a company even before 9/11 - the call came in over plain COTs - no caller ID. We reported it and they had the guy the next day.

This is something you need to discuss with your carriers security department before you start investing in additional hardware on your end.

As acewarlock has pointed out Malicious Trace will usually do the trick and it has the advantage that it's all performed by the telco (a trusted 3rd party) and conducted in a manner consistent with established legal frameworks.

If your people are certain they want to do it entirely in-house perhaps give them a copy of to review. If they're _still_ certain try getting your telco to quote on providing you real time ANI/ALI, not just Caller ID. If you're not mid-level government or a public safety agency it may prove quite difficult, however you might get lucky.

Malicious Call Trace is a Nortel pbx based trace program - the LEC has no control over that - but of course they have their own trace programs that the PBX has no control over.

True - I was thinking of the variously available *57 'Customer Originated Trace' facility. Presumably my LEC calls it Malicious Trace as they're historically a Nortel shop.

Cool - that feature would be great - but I don't know if there is an Flexible Feature Code to send that or not...or if one is required for it to work on a call over a PRI. Interesting stuff.
