I installed SuSE 9.1 and installed TightVNC on it. I connect to it from a Win2000 computer using RTVNC (or any other VNC client), but all I get is a blank screen with an X cursor. Once I managed to connect via a browser (with Java) on port 5801, and I got a shell, but now I get an empty screen with it too.

Where do I setup the programs that launch on connect? How do I run the KDE panel on login?

Look at the vncserver script. It by default launches an xterm and twm (tiny window manager) if i remember correctly. You can, after logging in, kill the twm, and this will just leave the xterm in the middle of your screen. After this, type "startkde" (or "startkde &") and KDE should load. However, do not close the console window, or you will kill KDE and such, and will have to restart the VNC server.

Try right-clicking on the screen. It should open a menu. That's the twm window manager, which is the default for VNC.

You can modify the startup file ~/.vnc/xstartup to start kde or gnome.

It seems a reboot solved all my problems - I now get the KDE login screen. Thanks for your help!
