Hi there,

We have a few OpenVMS servers, versions 7.2-1.
I have seen and downloaded a VNC client tool from the web, but I actually want a VNC Server that I can run on the OpenVMS server so that I can connect TO the server FROM my pc.

Does anyone know of a VNC Server or something similar available?

Thanks,
J.

Hello,

Do you have PC's connected to the OpenVMS servers?
If you do, just connect over to the PC and log into the
VMS server (SmartTerm, Reflections...).

JtheRipper,

The first relevant question is: Which IP package and which version of IP Package are you running on your VMS systems?

Both secure (ssh) and unsecure (telnet) terminal programs are supported on OpenVMS. There is also the question of the network configuration at your site. Presumably, the OpenVMS systems are on an intranet.

To address your needs more definitively, we will need more information on your installation.

Hi there,

Thanks for the quick replies.

I probably had to explain my scenario a bit better. I can connect to the server using terre term, telnet, etc etc.

I recently created an Oracle standby database on a Vms server. The only problem is that (and this is because we are using Oracle 8.1.6) is that an open sqlplus session has to run continuously. I can run this from my pc the whole time, but I would prefer to run this on the server because as soon as I have to restart my pc the recovery session stops. I can start the session on the server, but the problem comes in when there is i.e. a power loss or a network failure, or even worse, someone closes the session on the server. I then have to walk all the way down in the plant where the server is and go and start up the session etc etc. Hence my quest to find something like VNC for VMS, should someone do something to the server or something happen to the server I can just connect to the server and restart the sqlplus session on the server.

Hope this all makes a bit of sense....

Thanks,
J.

Could you start the SQL+ session at startup, and watch it using a watchdog program, if the process isn't available restart it?

Just a thought

That's what I'm also starting to think I should do. Looks like it's going to be the best solution....

Thanks,
J.

JtheRipper,

As PaulTEG noted, starting things automatically at startup is a far preferable solution to starting things manually.

When implementing that, you need to be careful to ensure that all situations are considered, else you will need manual intervention, which is what started this discussion in the first place.

To avoid the walk down to the server, set up either a terminal connection using ssh. If your security allows it, you can also use regular (unencrypted) telnet, but ssh is far preferable for maintaining the security of your severs management passwords (you can also use regular telnet over a VPN connection, but that requires a little more work).

This is a highly reliable way to do things, in my consulting practice, I use encrypted IP connections to connect to client machines on a daily basis, saving many, many miles of travel.

I hope that the above is helpful.
