Hi,

i got recently a VMX 100 for spare part purpose. Now i have to prgramm the system but nobody knows the login password.
Is there any way to reset the password ?

Best regards
Stefan

Have you tried the default passwords? You could get Avaya to reset the password for a charge when the VMX 100 was a supported product. I don't think that is an option now.

This is quite difficult unless you want to restore the database to default.
You need the systems diskettes and prompts diskettes and (best of all) DOS 5.0 PC to do the "rescue" job.

Best of all is to try the default psw's like: MAINT, ADMIN and REPORT.

If you can connect one port to an analog line and dial in from a modem and enter ###5, then the build in modem will startup. Then it is possible to see the s/w level etc.
Modem setup will be 1200 bps/ 7 bit / even / 1 stopbit.

Hi,

of course we tried the default passwords, MAINT,REPORT,....
but no one is the right one. The software is 7.1.4

Can you please explain how the procedure looks like to reset the password.
The maintenance application we are using is VMX CAT.

Best regards
Stefan

Can you log-in on a "lower" account than Maint?
If you can log-in on ADMIN, then make a back-up first.

To rescue the VMX-100 you need to download all software and prompts to the VMX-100.

Continued...
To do this you need the VMX-CAT s/w and 1 diskette with release 7.1.4 and also local/English language (6-7 disks).
Then you start up your PC running 38400 bps / 7 bits /Even Parity and One stopbit. After approx.2 hours all data has been transferred to the VMX-100.
You should choose new default system as the software you will transfer, no back-ups chosen (or you will need to have the password for that back-up!)
Hereafter you will be able to logi with MAINT.
(This procedure formats the HDD and let new s/w be put on the HDD).

ChuckRCT mentioned that Avaya used to take care of this for a fee back when it was a supported product, but you can still get an Avaya service-provider to help you out with it. Ours took care of a similar problem for us just a few months ago, if you want to try them. 858-272-8900. I think they're called Tristar.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Hi Doctor,

i`m in doubt that i do the right procedure.
Can you explain in detail what i have to do.
The VMXCAT application, the release 7.1.4 and the German prompts are at my PC. Also i have all required diskettes.

Doctor, you wrote: choose new default system as the software you will transfer.

At the cat software there is no entry such as default system.

Can you please help once again?

Br Stefan

If you start up CAT, and have all your native prompts, then go to Restore -> Select System Disk.
This will foramt the old HDD and install new s/w (7.1.4) and language prompts.
The VMX will loose all database, recording etc.
Choose a back-up with known or NO password.
This will install the VMX with s/w 7.1.4 , your native language and a back-up (or a template) with no password.
The deafult password will be MAINT for the higest account.

You could try to load the System Configuration (Preload).
This sould just install an empty data base.
Your folder on the PC should have at least one costimer back-up installed. Just make a folder under c:\VMXCAT\ named SN123456.100. Then it will work.

Sorry! To do this you need the password.
The only way is to Restore the system Disk A.7.1.4.
This sould just install an empty data base.

Still you need to do this:
Your folder on the PC should have at least one costumer back-up installed. Just make a folder under c:\VMXCAT\ named SN123456.100. Then it will work.
The folder can just be empty.

My folders on my pc:

C:\VMXCAT>

RL060103.100
RL060205.100
RL070104.100
SN123456.100

And the native prompts also.

When you begin the data transfer set the data speed to 38400.
A "crossed" serial cable should be used (TX->RX, and RX->TX)
Test this cable while trying to log on to the serial port of the VMX named TERM1.

Then begin to Restore the system Disk A.7.1.4.

If the procedure is running OK, you are prompted for
switching the VMX-100 OFF, and later ON.
Hereafter you are prompted for the 1 or 2 prompt sets that should be installed.
1 set of promts almost "eat" one hour of the "voice / messaging time" from the HDD.

I can also help you with other AVAYA/OCTEL 200/300 (Serenade) indtallations or maintenance, if needed.

Finally I found my old PC with all the VMX software.

To be able to reset the password you need:
CAT s/w, VMX-100 s/w (7.1.4), a natiive or English prompt set (PRMXXX7D) and a wellkown back-up (with a kown password).
Installing all this on C:\VMXCAT gives you a folder like this:

c:\VMXCAT\

14-03-2009 20:36 6 CAT.CFG
28-04-1993 16:48 254.043 CAT.EXE CAT program ver. 1.44

When all this is OK, just follow these instructions:
(HELP can also be found in the CAT program - check the field to the upper left after pressing ALT):
When you begin the data transfer set the data speed to 38400.

Hi Doctor,
the last two days i did the procedure you decribed several times but the result is always the same. IllEGAL PASSWORD.
The folder at my PC looks like as your description, except the files SYS_... are not available. But for me this files are not necessary for the restore procedure. Please correct me if it is wrong.
Before i starting the restore i have copieed a known backup from another system at the folder SN114250.100 ( This is my system id i want to restore ).
After that i have start the restore process SYSTEM DISK 7.1.4 and choose the appropriated language prompts.
The restore finished without any error but when i enter the known password the system prompt ILLEGAL PASSWORD.

Any hints what i have to do next.

Br Stefan

I personally don't think restoring the system disk process will alter the passwords, but that is just my opinion. The password is stored in the OCC chip like on the Octel 200 /300 and doing a restore on those systems never changed the passwords.

Maybe you are right, Joe!

Can you try to swap the OCC, Stefan, to an OCC with known passwords?

///doktor

Hi doctor, hi Joe,

i have swaped the OCC and i could login at the VMX100.
The question is:
How we can read out the password from the OCC from which i don`t know the password ?

Best regards
Stefan

I am sorry to say that it is not possible. I looked through my notes, and found out that I used to ask OCTEL this question. They could swap the OCC to a new one or logon with a special password to reset the OCC. But as they demanded a fee, I just swapped the OCC from a VMX-100, that we used for spare parts.
Did you get any faults in lhe alarm list after swapping the OCC? Try @L H. I did get some faults, and had to do a RECOMB (RECOMBINE) to get the data from the OCC transferred to the HDD.

///doktor

Hi doctor, that sounds not good. However, thank you very much for your support.
PS: After changing the OCC chip i got a feature license alarm but i have solved it with the command RESTO. ( RESTO transfers information from the OCC to the HDU.
