I've seen some old threads on VMWare, are people still using it? If so, what is your experience with the quality of the calls? I'm specifically thinking TW here, something with a real time requirement.

Thanks.

Not using it for any real time myself only other applications. Teleworker picky about NIC access. Others may have a positive experience.

I just got done loading my Quickconference server on a vmware server. so far so good for me.

yep, had Mobile Extension and quick conference on VMWare no probs too. Just make sure it's set for fixed MAC so the mac address diesn't change because the licence files are tied to the MAC

And no one had complained about the voice quality? I would be surprised (unless they are substantial servers) that vmware would be able to keep up to the packet rate.

Quic conference might complain, but ME doesn't handle voice so I would think it works on VMWare.

Keep in mind the difference between "Does it Work?" and "Does Mitel Support It?"

Although many of these applications CAN be virtualized and they will work, your options are severly limited should anything go wrong.

Once you deviate from the Engineering Guidelines your support from Mitel is Best Effort Only

Agreed, there is currently no support for it. I was more interested in whether or not people were using it and happy with the results. I can see it working well for management applications (OPsMgr, etc), but would be skeptical as to whether or not it would hold up to actual voice traffic (Quick Conference, Teleworker).

Enterprise Manager is one of the few App's that Mitel has agreed to support on virtual servers. That is not to say that the solution is easy to implement.

See the following post from MitelInMyBlood.

His last comment sums it up nicely.

All windows APPs are supported on VMWare now.

Ent/OPS
YA / UC
Contact Centre

Then for the Linux apps, that's why they made the MAS, multiple apps in a Mitel environment with one front end

Hello all.
First off, I'm not very familiar with Mitel apps. I have a client that has a pretty robust server that they are not getting much use out of. It has Mitel Mobile Worker app running on it. It is a CentOS 4.4 OS. I told them we could likely convert it to a VMWare box and put the app back as a VM. What I would like to do is bring in my test VMWare server and do a conversion. The new converter does do Linux. I tested a P to V converstion of a centOS machine into VMware, which worked great. My question is, is there anything weird to look out for? i.e. MAC address, specific hard ware issues, etc. As long as the app is just running in linux and is using an IP address to talk to the Mitel 3300 I don't see any issues.

Thank you for your time.

First off, DLongdo, you should start your own thread instead of piggy backing off someone elses. The system sends email notifications and Irwin does not need to be bothered with answers to your questions.

That being said, Mobile Extension is a Linux OS app and does not play nice in the virtual environment. As mentioned earlier for Irwin's questions, there are ways to make it work but it is not supported by Mitel. The main issue is that the licensing is tied to a specific MAC address. There are other issues as well. Be patient, Mitel is aware of the demand.

Our entire infrastructure is running off VMware, our currently running systems are:

YA
Enterprise Manager
Teleworker
Mobile Extension (This worked fine, but we no longer use it)
CCM
Played with NuPoint. Was fine but never met our requirements.

Never had an issue installing MSL in a vmware environment.

Rob, How many users do you have off of your Teleworker? Can you give me some specs on the server you're using and the configuration of your VM (#cpus, etc). Are they all running on the same server? Thanks.

Teleworker is running for just 5 users at the moment.
Physical phone quality is good, YA softphones we are experiencing quality issues at the moment.

Hosted on a HP DL360 G5

2 x QUAD Core CPU's
18Gb Memory
quad port NIC
and onboard dual NIC used for Mitel VLAN

The server is hosting 7 other servers including a 2003 Domain Controller, YA, CCM, Enterprise Manager, Teleworker, In house CRM package server and a second test YA server.

VMware stats show the teleworker only using 152Mhz and 645Mb of ram. We have assigned 2 CPU's and 1gb of RAM.

Any other questions let me know.

Did you get this working? I would like to move our Teleworker Solution to VMware ESXi. What Linux Distro should I choose in VMware as the closest to CentOS?

Linux distro selection is needed for kernel modules only and what kind of packages to present to OS for installation. Try RedHat. From my experience you may have two issues. Internet connection problems on your side or user's side and ESX performance issues. When a user is calling you and complaining on bad voice quality you cannot be sure that it is his internet connection. It works, but I prefer to stay on the safe side.

Got YA and CCM running on a VM no probs here. Not going to bother putting ops on now though.
