I installed a vmware winxp-sp2 client on my winxp-pro-xp2 machine.

I cannot connect to the internet.

Looking at the virtual machine paddress, I changed it after noticing it was assigned an ipaddress in a different segment. I modified to use dhcp. Still no go. I then changed it be on the same segment (192.168.1.51). In neither case was I able to ping my router (192.168.1.1).

This used to work with dchp but I don't what I did to stop the virtual machine networking capabailities to be disabled.

HELP!!!

I've managed to make it work by modifying my virtual machine's network connection to make it use NAT instead of bridging.

But how can I make it work using the default method of bridging - or is that not possible?

My thinking here is that I want it to work with the minimum of deviation from the default. If bridging is the default configuration for the VM, why does it not work?

Cheers

Do you have multiple nic's in your machine (ie a wireless and wired nic?) If so try having a look at the Virtual Network Settings, untick the Automatic Bridging and assign VMNet0 to the preferred nic and give that a try (I had similar issues hence me investigating.. I have multiple nic's and it was taking it from my Dev network rather than Prod).

SimonD.

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

Thanks for your suggestion - but I do not have multiple nic's, only the one.

After having repeated problems with DHCP not working properly, I uninstalled VMWARE version 5.0.

After that, I had no more networking problems at all.

I have since installed VMWARE 5.5 but have not yet created any virtual machines.

I will - eventually - after giving more time to ensure the problem was due to VMWARE, which I am now almost certain is the case.

Hopefully, version 5.5 will correct the problem.
