Hello

What maintenance release are you on? Have you rebooted since your last upgrade/patch install?

Thanks

Yep surely I can.. one of them is :

# svmon
/unix is not in xcoff format
/unix does not match the executing kernel.
Exiting, as svmon can not obtain valid kernel addresses.

vmtune, vmmon, etc do not work may be the package is not installed.

Yep i did reboot, not once but many a times, and "maintenance release" means what ?

When was the last time you applied any maintenance loads, patches, or otherwise changed the system configuration? It sounds like you have kernel problems. Your saying the system otherwise runs fine except for those commands?

Actually I did not installed this RS/6000 Machine, and more over i use to work with open source like LInux and FreeBsd, AIX seems to be different from them, it has been just few days that i have start looking after this AIX system, the first thing i figure out is the swap partition, that is too less. When I try to use any system monitering command it did not work and gives error like I posted earliera, so did the 'sar' command and others till now only one has worked and that is 'topas'

This is the situation..any help!!

Okay, so you are running with ML (maintenance level) 9, but with some filesets backlevel (probably java). To find out which filesets are backlevel use:
instfix -icqk 4330-07_AIX_ML | grep ':-:'

Can you check that the file /usr/lib/boot/unix_mp exists and is not zero length.

Could you also confirm that this is a multi processor system:
lsdev -Cc processor
lscfg -vp | grep -ip cabinet

Normally the message you are getting from vmstat is seen when:
a) an upgrade to the kernel image has been done but the system hasn't been rebooted.
b) the links to the kernel image are missing/corrupted.
c) the wrong image is being used.

Here is the output of the commands, I just found that topas is working.. but for rest of the commands no use..

This problem can usually be resolved by making sure there is the following link setup:

ls -l /unix
Note: The link should look like this:

unix -> /usr/lib/boot/unix_mp
Setup the proper link if needed:

ln -s /usr/lib/boot/unix_mp /unix
-----------------------------------------------------------
OR
---
Problem
0515-001 ipcs -a returns no valid name list found in /Unix.
OR
0551-129 knlist from vmstat
Solution
These errors are caused by one of two occurences.
/unix link is missing
To determine:
#cd /
#pwd /
#ls -l /unix

-> no file exists
To repair:
On single processor machine:

ln -s /usr/lib/boot/unix_up /unix

On a multiple processor machine:

ln -s /usr/lib/boot/unix_mp /unix

The unix file is Zero bytes.
To determine:
#cd /
#ls -l /unix
/unix -> /usr/lib/boot/unix_up
#ls -l /usr/lib/boot/unix_up
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root system 0 Mar 17 1998
/usr/lib/boot/unix_up

The number before the date indicates the file size.

To repair:
First determine what level the kernel is at presently. #lslpp -l bos.mp (or bos.up in the case of a single processor).

Next, install or restore the same level of bos.mp . If you have a CD with an AIX APAR or Maintaince level on that has a matching level, then just enter the following SMIT fast path. Choose the cd drive and use the following options to overwrite:

smit install_latest

Install and Update from LATEST Available Software screen, select or type in entry fields. Press Enter AFTER making all desired changes.

INPUT device / directory for software
/dev/cd0
SOFTWARE to install
[ F4 choose bos.mp ]
PREVIEW only? (install operation will NOT occur)
no
COMMIT software updates?
yes
SAVE replaced files?
no
AUTOMATICALLY install requisite software?
no
EXTEND file systems if space needed?
yes
OVERWRITE same or newer versions?

VERIFY install and check file sizes?
no
Include corresponding LANGUAGE filesets?
yes

I HOPE THIS RESOLVES UR PROBLEM
