Eyup,

I've recently installed vmware server v1.0.1 in order to create a test machine on my laptop. I intend to install Windows XP Pro, SQL Server 2005 and the suite of Crystal Products upon the virtual server.

The problem i'm having is that performance on my PC seems to have suffered since the install, even though i've not started VMWare Server. I've looked at my processes and found that vmserverdWin32.exe is using 20,000K and vmware-authd.exe is using 6000k of my memory. Can i stop these processes if i'm not using vmware, and if so what would be the best method?

I have 2gb of RAM on my machine so more than enough memory.

Many thanks

Thats only 26 meg of out of 2 gig, i dont think that is your problem and i would leave them alone. Something else is probably causing your perceived performance issue, can you elaborate on what you think the performance problem is? The issue i see is you state XP Pro and SQL 2005, unless you mean SQL 2005 Express it wont install on an XP box.

even though it doesnt use a large amount of resources make sure you just dont close out the VM stop the machine first

Thanks Roadki11 & Denny,

However to answer your postings...

I have stopped the VMWare server before closing the application.
NB: I allocated 8gb hard disk space and 1gb RAM to the vmserver.

With regards to installing SQl Server 2005 Development on an XP Pro OS this is possible, as you can see from the System Requirements at:

(NB. I have not installed either XP Pro or SQL Server on the vmserver yet...)

I notice particular performance difference at startup, as the machine appears to struggle with opening Outlook and IE.

I recently installed additional memory on my laptop to make the 2gb to assist with vmware etc. However i only realised later that my virtual memory had been set to custom size. I changed this to System Managed Size after advice from my friends. Total paging size for all drives is now:
Minimum allowed: 2mb
Recommended: 3058mb
Currently allocated: 2039mb

... maybe this is the problem?!?

Also in the Performance tab on Task Manager the Physical memory reads on average:
Total: 2088316
Available: 1519740
System Cache: 306116
(Running only IE7 and Outlook)

Could this performance problem then be due to my settings after installing the memory?
