Hello All!

Just upgraded my IPO 406 to 2.1(27) and upgraded VMailPro to 2.1(14). After two VmailPro lockups today, went back to 2.1(10).

I'm trying to get VmailPro to send Alerts via SMTP (since I've had no success with MAPI). I watch the log for VmailPro and do not see any references to SMTP activity. Should there be anything in the log ? Of course, it's not sending email.

When I go into the VmailPro Client, Administration -> Preferences -> MAPI, I have NO entries for 'Mapi Profile' or 'Mapi Password'. For 'Use Email Protocol' I have SMTP checked.

When I go to Control Panel -> IP Office Voicemail Pro -> SMTP Email Settings, I have the proper mail server specified, the port number is 25, and the 'Mail Drop' is blank (what's this anyway ?). I do NOT have checked 'Server requires authentication'.

I have Outlook 2000 on the same PC. When I point it to the same mail server, it sends mail without any problems. My ISP has a very 'open' mail server for their 'leased line' clients that does not require any sort of authentication, etc.

The PC is running Windows XP Pro with ALL of the latest Microsoft updates, but NOT SP2.

I mentioned that I had NO success with MAPI. Well, I got as far as VmailPro putting messages into Outlook's Outbox. But the messages would not automatically 'send'. I would have to click 'send/receive' in Outlook to actually send them out. Yes, I made sure I checked "Send messages immediately when connected".

Any Ideas ?
Thank You !!

For MAPI the VM Pro has to login into the domain as a domain user. The login name and password for the domain must also be used for a e-mail account in Exchange.
If done so then open Outlook on the VM Pro and test if it opens without asking for a username/password and you should be able to send mail.
Then you can setup VM Pro to use MAPI.
SMTP is a lot easier to deploy, you only make a connection to a SMTP mail server and if necessery enter a username/password for the server.
You can test SMTP quite easy with a Telnet session.
If you go to the site of Microsoft and do a search on : SMTP Telnet, then you will find a document how to send mail with a telnet session.

If you are using MAPI in Outlook check E-mail Service Options, click to select corporate, not internet only. You should use the Corporate or Workgroup option if:
You send and receive all your mail through an ISP, but you use other programs requiring the installation of the MAPI services, for example, a Voice Mail service.

Reply to Intrigrant: Thanks for your suggestions. Concerning MAPI, we are not using Exchange on our network. We send mail directly to our ISP's smtp server. I did verify that VMPro logs on using the proper domain UserID. I also checked that I could start Outlook without having to enter a UserID / Password. Still no luck.

Concerning SMTP: I tried sending email from the command prompt (via telnet) and was able to do this very easily -- no problems at all. But, still, VMPro would not send anything. Do you have any other suggestions relating to SMTP ? This seems to be the easier way to go.

Reply to Photon33: Thanks for your suggestions. I'll admit, it sounded odd to me -- because we do not use Exchange. But I did as you said (set Outlook to 'Corporate or Workgroup Option') and it works !! VMPro is sending alerts via MAPI, through Outlook, to our ISP's SMTP server. Quite a convoluted path, but it works. Thanks Again!

as you have resolved the problem this is just academic:-
Make sure that your VMPOr settings incontroll pannel specify a Valid e-mail address, may ISP's no block e-mails unless form a registerd point of origin to prevent spam
(I wish they all would!)
