VM Pro migration from UC Linux to Win 7 - R8.1 - Restore doesn't seem to function

Has anyone tried doing a backup on the UC and then restoring it to a Win7 VMP Server? We have a few large 120 user installations where we're going to be replacing the UC module, but I'm trying to make sure we have a solid backup plan in case we need to migrate them to a Win platform.

I've been messing around trying to get it to work right for the past few days, and keep getting similar results. All data is getting to the proper folders, but the system is only recognizing the user names, not the greeting or messages in the mailboxes. This is a fresh system, I've uninstalled/reinstalled a few times and made sure that all data left after uninstall was deleted before reinstalling.

Errors I'm seeing is that it will just hang on the first attempt (let it sit for 2 hours, just in case). Need to end the restore task to get the screen to close. Once that happens, you can do the restore and the process will complete - with errors (log file below, same errors each time)

I thought I'd be able to manually move the files (accounts, greetings, prompts...) from the UC to the Win server, and reload the call flows, but only the names are recognized on the mailboxes, not the greetings or messages. (and I really don't want to go through and rebuild every user's .intuity file)

Any thoughts/suggestions are welcome - As far as I can tell, everything I'm doing matches the docs (knowledge base is more up to date than the PDFs) but I might be missing a step somewhere...

Should be supported, as this is right out of a bulletin "For VoiceMail Pro 7.0, the backup and restore process can be used to move data from a Windows based voicemail server to a Linux based voicemail server and vice versa. This allows migration from one server platform to another."

CalgaryGeff stated here in UC Module PCN 1920H that,
"(the) Only problem is you have to manually load in the greetings/callflows and such since the UC backup wont load directly into the PC version (At least not the windows one)."

Hope this helps.

I think this might be a little different than both, unless the module I'm testing with already has corruption on it.

Both immediate and weekly backups I've tested don't work on a restore, and I just tried taking apart some of the Tar files from a few different backups. Each time I'm getting an "Unexpected end of file" error.

Just wondering if anyone else has had success with this.

I have had an issue lately with restoring a Windows backup.
Did not work either.
But login on the UCM and export the databse (as mdb)
If that fails then export all modules.
Be sure you have the callflows of users and group written down somewhere.

Login with SSH and copy all files form the folder /opt/vmpro/vm
Then import the mdb file or all modules and put all the wavs in the right place.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

Thanks Tlpeter - The export/import is working fine... And I have no problem getting all the custom WAV files off as well... More concerned about the greetings and VM messages for the users we're going to need to migrate. I can copy the greetings and accounts folders without problem as well, but it looks like the intuity files are slightly different, as when I restart the win service, only the standard message with the recorded name is playing on the mailboxes, and although there are messages in the accounts folders, the MWI isn't working. Have a few larger 100+ user sites, and our backup plan is to zip up all messages and email them to the users, but it would be nice to restore the file structure and not have to have everyone reinitialize their mbx's.

Why not install the Applications server on the external PC & stick with Linux?

Just a couple of reasons... And I know a bunch of people love Linux...

External PC is for testing/emergency situations. In an ideal world, tech can come to site, backup the existing UC, and restore backup to their laptop if needed to get the customer back up while any additional work is being done. Also, for remote access, a windows machine gives us Manager locally and saves a lot of headaches and travel time.

I did call in yesterday, and the thought is that both UC's I'm trying to restore already have bad sectors which are corrupting the backups from the beginning. Not 100% sure about that, but its the best theory.

I had to replace a UCM (about 2 months ago) and could not even upload the backup from the old UCM. Actually to specify I could upload the call flows but not the wav files and had to rerecord all their auto attendants (thank goodness only 4) to get them back up running.
Before you ask, yes the root password was correct and I could download files via WinSCP but uploading it complained about rights and I don't know Linux so it was easier to just re-record.

I do not like the UCM at all any more but they make money as we don't sell them we don't sell support on a flat rate for them just on an hourly basis otherwise we would have to swallow all the Avaya screw-ups for the UCM and that is not an option.

Interrupt the silence only if you improve it by saying something, otherwise be quiet and everybody will be grateful.

I have found on the Linux based version it only lets me upload the wav files into the Custom directory. Then you just repoint any modules to that directory.

I can understand the temp migration to a spare/engineers PC in the event of a failure (although when a UC fails you have usually lost the option to back it up).

For remote access if your customers have ISDN trunks you can use dial-up networking through ans ISDN TA & run manager locally,, this is how I access 99% of our 1500+ sites. correctly this will also allow access to the Apps server/C110 so it is not necessary to remote desktop to another PC running manager.

The reasons the Linux solution is preferred by many are Cost, Ease of installation & Demarcation (no danger of Microsoft or the customers IT Team breaking something).

App server can run in a Virtual Machine so it should still be possible for your engineers to restore partial service if needed.

Preacher mode over, Good luck withthe migration process if that is the way you go.

jeff/nurban

once you have uploaded the files to the custom directory you can ssh to the c110/app server (putty is the ssh client most commonly used on windows) & then move them to the correct directory.

This does require a little knowledge of the linux command line

IPGuru - Noted... We're working towards it, keeping it simple for our support model at this time.

Was able to get everything but messages to work this morning - Exported call flows, grabbed the accounts, greetings, names, and messages folders. Initialized 1 mailbox then just copied the .intuity file to each user folder. Tedious, but upon restart of the service, all mailboxes came back 100%.

Zipped and emailed the messages to each user to avoid loss of data. Not the best use of time, but it got the job done.
