Hello,

I am totally new to the Nortel/Avaya 2500 range switches.
I need to have 2 vlans, 1 for data and 1 for voice.
That is no problem at all but i cannot seem to find whih setting is used to tag vlan 2 to a port and untag vlan 1 for the same port.
The phones will use vlan 2 and the pc's will use vlan 1.

I am a bit confused which commands to use in the CLI or how to do it from the web interface (i prefer the CLI, then i can have a look in the web interface later)

Thanks,

Peter

That works too (i think)
I still have to see what happens when i pull one of both cables to see if i did it the right way.

Do you have any recommendations what else to setup?

I believe that QOS is done with this:
Code:
vlan ports 1-28 tagging unTagAll filter-untagged-frame disable filter-unregistered-frames enable priority 0

Do i need to give VLAN 2 a prioirty?

Any other things to mind on these switches?

I think the way to do QoS is (at least in part) as per this old config of mine:

qos if-group name Uplink class trusted
qos if-group name Users class unrestricted
qos if-assign port 1/1-47 name Users
qos if-assign port 1/48 name Uplink

Another question.
We use the 2500 range.
We want to use Avaya IP phones.
I have read played with ADAC and LLDP but it does not work.
The phone gets the right vlan but never finds the callserver which is configured too.

Any pointers how to do this?

Sorry, I don't have all my Nortel configs with me, but here is a bit showing how I configured LLDP:

lldp port 1/1-47 status txAndRx config-notification
lldp tx-tlv port 1/1-47 local-mgmt-addr port-desc sys-cap sys-desc sys-name
lldp tx-tlv port 1/1-47 dot1 vlan-name 100,200

As far as the callserver goes, I think that was assigned via adding a vendor option in DHCP.

Hi Vince, i think you are spot on about the callserver.
What happened is that the IP phone booted and got the right vlan id,
But then the phone just kept asking for DHCP which it did not get although the callserver itself is the DHCP server in the vlan.

I will try your suggestions.
Thanks

Well, I've noticed some vendors provide excellent documentation about adding their vendor option to DHCP, while others are less excellent.

Siemens' had the best DHCP doco in my memory. Next time I have access to my document trove I'll see if I can share it.
The Nortel documentation works if you follow it properly (don't leave out spaces). (Or maybe it was don't add spaces...one or the other).

Avaya uses option 176 and 242 (newer phones) so that is not a problem.
The strange thing is that it did not found the DHCP server of the pbx while that was connected on to the callserver port.

Do you have seperate DHCP servers for voice and Data?

Is that something that's been thought about?

It's always seemed to me to be easiest to have a single DHCP server(or cluster) serving out scopes for all VLANs.

In this case i have two DHCP servers.
But that should not be a problem in a vlan.

I think i had ADAC and LLDP working BUT it takes a long time before the phone gets an ip address from the voice vlan and the pc connected to the phone also gets an ip address from the same voice vlan.
This off course should be from the data vlan.

Hi tlpeter,

I actually have the same question as you, I have ProCurve switches for Avaya VoIP and I followed the excellent application notes for interoperability with IP Office (for example
Shame a similair quickstart doesnt exist for Avaya switches themselves.

I have a few questions hope that is ok...

What PBX are you using? Aura or IP Office?

Is ADAC and LLDP mandatory for Avaya phones? Can we not just use DHCP option 242?

Would it be possible to post your config so far to help me get upto speed please?

If you have any other pointers would be great, i am about to embark on the same journey (as soon as i can find my serial console cable!).

Many thanks and any help you can give would be much appreciated,

Chris

Hi Chris,

I am using an ipoffice.
And yes, option 242 can be used and that id what i am going to do.
Adac build the voice vlan for you and applies qos for you.
Lldp can be used too but i am not impressed about it.
It takes way too long.

I am not sure i did this time.
Some data guys form Avaya are investigating this and will come back to me.

OK, ADAC works but very slow.
It seems to take more then 30 seconds before LLDP and ADAC come in to action.
So the phone does a DHCP request and then after about 30 seconds it restart in the right VLAN and then it does a DHCP request for about 30 seconds to the IP Office (PBX) and then it gets one and registers.
The ERS2500 is very slow on this responses but it will do it at the end.
