I need to be able to route (or bridge) via a VLAN. I would like to be able to define a vlan, add 1 port to it and have that segment be on a different subnet. I am using a Cisco 2924xl (I also have some 3com switches if they are easier or whatever) I am currently soft bridging a using a Sun machine and would like to take the load off of it. example:
port1: trunk
ports 2-13 server farm 10.1.1.0/24
port 14 (seperate subnet) 10.1.2.0/26
port 15 (wireless LAN subnet) 10.1.3.0/28
port 16 (seperate subnet) 10.1.4.0/29

I'm thinking this is this possible, is it? if so, how?

It's very possible to do this a couple of ways. One is called "router on a stick" You set up the VLANs and send the trunk to a router and let it do the routing. I have done this in my own labs using 1900s and 2500 routers. right now I have a 1900 with 3 distinct VLANS and a 2514 routing between two of them. The 3rd VLAN is not routed as I use it to get my sniffer on the raw data stream coming in on my DSL link.

You can use layer 3 routing if you have the slots for the card but you have stackable cisco. You could get a 2621 with a WIC card of extra ether ports and go nuts. The 2621 has the 10/100 you need for the trunk link.

I've got my core router (a 7206xl) plugged right into it via the FE0/0 port on the router, what I've tried is to create a VLAN, give it an IP, and route a /28 block to the VLAN IP. Then I plug a laptop into the switchport that I have added to the VLAN and give it one of the /28 addresses. It has yet to work. I must be configuring something wrong. Also, on a side note, sometimes when I create a VLAN and add a port to it it won't come out of shutdown mode (the VLAN). I'm more of a Firewall guy than a switch guy, so it's very possible that I missed or misconfigured something. Any Ideas?

I mean that my Core Router is plugged right into the 2924 switch.
