I am learning all of this so bear with me. We have IP phones that are using DHCP from the IP Office. Two VLAN's have been set up, VLAN 1 for data and VLAN 10 for voice. I noticed that there is not a setting in the IPO where you can designate the VLAN. I would like to be able to just plug the phone in and let DHCP happen but I have to manually put in the VLAN. I know there has to be a better way, not that it is too painful. Any suggestions? Remember that I am not really familiar with DHCP servers.

You really need to do this with the dhcp server in the data lan.

Make an option 176 and 242 with this string in it:
L2QVLAN=10

honey, i fried the IP Office !!!

Sarcasm, it's only one of the services I offer.

The IP Office doesn't do VLAN's at all, you need something else to do that for you as tlpeter suggested with a scope option :)

But the VLAN id can be set manually at the phones and all will be well correct? We are just late in the game and I am almost completed with all the phones. The server change can be done later for additional phones. Thanks guys!

depends on the network setup

I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
My wish has come true. I no longer know how to use my telephone.

Matt, can you explain more about that?

depends on many things...

VLANS seperate network traffic into seperate broadcast domains and subnets.

If your IP office and IP Phones are in different Vlans, you need to be able to route between them (either a router-on-a-stick or layer 3 switch)

The IPO and IP phones are on the same VLAN.

So, i'm gonna tryy to explain to you.
I doesn't speak english very well so I hope you will understand.

the phones can tag the tcp/ip frame but not the ipo.

To make this work, you have to set up your switch.
And "tell" to your switch to tag the tcp/ip frame from a specific port.

When I intall an IPO, I do it like this.

On your switch :
- create the vlan (10 in this case)
- set up all the port of your switch to "tagged" on the vlan10
- choose one port on your switch and set this port to "untagged" on the vlan 10.
- Change the PVID setting on this port and set it to 10.
(and plug your IPO on this port, this configuration will tag the IPO tcp/ip frame with the tag 10)
- find the port where your DHCP server on the vlan0 is plugged and set this port to "exclude" on the vlan10
- and on the QoS settings, choose "DSCP"

then either you define you vlan manually on the phone (by pressing * at startup) or you can tell to your DHCP server on the vlan0 to change the vlan setting on your phone.
By adding "L2QVLAN=10" to the 176 and 242 option.

Hope this will help you

If the phones have a dedicated port and it is not shared with a computer or another device just set the switchport to untagged 10. It takes all the DHCP, phone problems and troubleshooting out of the picture. Everything on that switchport is on VLAN 10. And then you can enable the IPO DHCP on this port to manage the phones.

Keep in mind that if all your IPO is on a seperate VLAN you need either VLAN routing to have applications work and to maintain the switch from your computer VLAN or what I like to do is dual home the IPO. I will have all my voice traffic on VLAN 10 and the second interface I will have on my computer VLAN so my client applications work.
