I've set 2 VLANs connected into a switch and the switch to a router. Everything works but the problem is from any station belonging to VLAN10 I have 100% success at ping any_station_vlan20. If there are 2 different VLANs normally the ping between the two must fail.

Can someone give me an advice what's wrong?

Thanks

omegasa,

You said - "If there are 2 different VLANs normally the ping between the two must fail."

NO, they do not need to fail, if the gateways on the PCs are setup correctly and you have no ACLs on the router to prevent it then the router will connect the 2 different networks/VLANs and a PING will work! Since you have a router, the router is doing what routers do - routing traffic (the ping) between 2 networks/VLANs.

Hope this helps!

Yes, you are right. There are no ACLs. Thanks CiscoGuy33

omegasa,

If you are doing a "lab" then you might be thinking of a common VLAN lab that is used for students to understand VLANs.

What they do is use JUST a switch and set it up as you have with 2 PCs attached. They ping each PC and everything is GREAT. You then setup VLANs and plug the 2 PCs in different VLANs and do the same ping and it does not get to the other PC (VLANS and no router to connect).

This shows students that with VLANs and the PCs attached to the same switch BUT different VLANs, the 2 can not communicate (without the "router on a stick").

Just some thoughts!

Just make sure you don't plug a cable from one port in the switch into the same switch---we had some goofnut do that in our class a few years back...he was trying to trunk different VLANs in the same switch, and used a straight-thru cable. Ha ha ha. He got flack from everyone for the rest of the semester!
