Hello all,

I have a core switch for one network (Academic Network IP 10.10.10.1 4050 on VLAN1) and I want it to speak to another core switch (Admin Network IP 10.10.10.190 on VLAN1, 5500G-EI). I've trunked a port on each of the two switches and linked them.

Everything seems right. I've done this with all our other switches all across campus, but this one switch just refuses to talk to the other switch. This is the first time I've tried to get VLAN1 to meet across both networks.

Now, these switches are the cores of our two completely physically separate networks. Both switches can get to the other switches on their side via IP without an issue. No switches from that side of the network can get through to the 4050 side of the network though.

The networks do meet in one other place. We have an internal firewall between the Admin network and the academic network where all internet traffic goes, but this is not on VLAN1.

I can get exact IP numbers and whatnot for you guys if needs be, just thinking I was missing something here that was easy.

I'm thinking all the traffic trying to get to the other switches is being routed out through the firewall instead of through the VLAN1 port for some reason.

Summary:

Two cores linked via VLAN1 on two trunked ports
Both have IP's in the same subnet
Both can ping around to other switches on their own networks
Can't ping each other, no traffic getting through

Any ideas?

I would check the port speed and duplex. Maybe you should try to set both ports duplex settings and speed settings to the same thing. is the subnet mask for both sites /24 subnet mask?

Is it a /24 network or two smaller networks that you are trying to link together?
