Does anyone know of a low cost solution for a visual indicator (flashing or strobe light) for 2008 phones? I need to have them not ring, but be able to see they are ringing. My vendor sugested a 4100 AuxBox for visual ringing and a strobe, but they are almost $400 each.

No problem. I'm thinking make the digital sets scn and program an analog line for each line and go to radio shack. Attach a flasher, but no phone. This is for a Neonatal ICU, noise is a bad thing.

That will certainly do the trick, just remember to make sure the MARP stays on the 2008 to maintian any hunting and forwarding.

Remember, if you have multiple DN's on the phone you will only lamp the analog on Key 0

But wouldn't the hunt change the ringing line (if key 0 was busy) to the second line or third ect. if individual analog lines were used? And yes I agree all lines marp'd to a digital set.

It sure would. So to accomplish this you would need a 500 port and light for each line. Maybe not a good solution for a multi line set.

If you feel crafty, and you have an extra set to play with, pull it apart and measure the voltage on the LED and wire that to a sensing relay that trips a light. I used to love to build that kind of stuff and could be done pretty easily for just a few bucks. Mike Sandman should have everything you need, or a local electronics supply shop.

OK, I got to thinking about this, and then I remembered that the 2000 series phones don't flash the LED on ringing. So I took one of my spare 2616's apart and started poking around and came up with something.

Right below the speaker on the printed circuit board there are six pins sticking straight up about 1/2" long. They are marked as P2 and numbered as follows:

4 5 6

1 2 3

Whenever pins are sticking up, they are there for a reason, so after poking around in a few places I found with my multi-meter that there is 5VDC voltage present when the phone rings between pins 2 and 5, and no voltage between the rings. Pin 5 is (-) and Pin 2 is (+).

So, this gives you a great place to tap 5VDC which is plenty of juice to trigger a relay that will flash whatever light you want with every ring.

Now the bad, but not-to-bad news. I tested this with SCN and got NO VOLTAGE so you will have to leave SCR on the phone and either turn down the ringer, or clip the speaker leads while your in the set (they are right there next to the pins you are working on).

I imagine a 2008 has something similar inside, but if not, you can always throw a 2616 there. Last I checked 2616s were about $15 to $20 on eBay, so you are not risking too much.

Thanks for giving me a fun project for the night!

My question is Why are you using 2008 phones? are you going to answer this phone if you see a flashing light or are you going to do a Call pickup.

More info on how what your trying to do might help.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

The answer is both. If the nurse is at the desk she will answer. If at bedside she will call pickup. The problem is the phones can't ring, because the babies are very sick or premature and the ringing phone could startle them. All sets at the hospital are 2000 series and that's what I have stock of.

SO if that's the case, move the number for the nurse to JUST the 500 port, and then any phone can do a call pickup when that phone light the light.

You only run a slight risk if a second call hits the analog port while call 1 is still ringing and hasn't been grabbed with the call pickup feature.

But it won't always be a call pickup. Probably will have at least 3 lines hunting, so again I'm thinking scn for the 5 2008's w/ 3 analog flashers for the lines. I know this is an unusual situation, but due to criticality of the patients, calls cannot be missed.

Star for you.

Nice tip!

I also just tweaked this a bit.

I desoldered the MWI LED and resoldered it to the pins I referenced. Now I have a nice bright LED indicator on ringing calls on the set!

No voltage present on the BUZZ though, so I have to play with the set so it RINGS on all call appearances. Anyone remember the CLS for that? I'll have to dig back in the books, I forgot what that one was.....

Old age setting in I guess!

Here's what I was looking at in the CLS:
(BUZZ) Buzz
RNGI Apply ringing when idle but off hook
RNGB Apply ringing when idle but off hook or busy on the
other line

Nortel makes an aux contact that goes in the base of the phone and you can run a 24 volt strobe through this and it will flash when the phone rings.
