Hey all,

I'm running Vista Business on a fairly new ThinkPad. About a month ago Vista occasionally would give me a "The user name or password is incorrect" when I logged in. At first I thought it was me but sometimes I would type using two fingers to make sure I wasn't spelling anything wrong and sometimes I'd still get the error. This morning I removed my laptop from the domain and had some trouble getting it to reconnect. NOW, neither of my domain logins is working--Domain Admin or my Domain name login. I know that I'm not spelling anything wrong, and I know both accounts are working because I can log into other machines with both accounts. I've tried logging in using:

DomainUser
DomainPassword

Domain\User
DomainPassword

User@Domain.com
DomainPassword

BiteMeMS
FrustrationMounting

None of these worked, but then I didn't really expect the last one to work. I've already had to go in and reactivate the accounts. I'm not sure about any other ways to change the login syntax. Has anyone else had this problem and figured it out? I'm Running a Win2k3 domain. Any and ALL answers will be appreciated!

Thanks,

Joe B

Hi smah,

I checked on the Number Lock thing and I'm good there. I was curious so I checked the Event Viewer and found a new error. Here's the text from the error:

The winlogon notification subscriber <TrustedInstaller> was unavailable to handle a critical notification event.

The event logs in my domain controllers are clean.

Thanks,

Joe B

Can you try another keyboard on the laptop, or try using the OSD keyboard by pressing Windows Key + U .

Hi linney,

I tried using the on-screen keyboard and I still get the bad name or password error. FWIW I can login to the laptop itself. I've tested keystrokes and everything comes up like I type it. I'll head over to the server forum and see if anyone over there has any ideas.

Thanks,

Joe B

<<here's a dupe post from the 2k3 server forum>>

OK, I think I'm on to something. I removed my network account from the laptop and then re-added my network account back onto the laptop. I can login to the domain again. So does anyone think that my moving to a Win2k3 domain caused this, or was it something else? My guess is it's a combination of Vista still be a relatively new OS combined with the move from 2k to 2k3 on the network. Hope this "discovery" can help others in the same situation.

Thanks,

Joe B

I thought I'd put this in here too in case someone is having a similar problem and they aren't connecting to a Windows 2003 domain.

That's it. I'm giving up. Once again my laptop is not logging onto my domain. I can't tell if it's a Vista problem or a Server 2k3 problem, but either way I can't depend on it. I haven't been able to get on the domain for a week now so I'm going to move all of my network software onto my desktop. That will be somewhat limiting for me, but at least I know I'll always be able to get on the domain. Thanks again to everyone who has helped me. If I find an answer in the future I'll post it, but at that point I'm not very optimistic.

Thanks,

Joe B
