I put Vista Rc2-5744 on my 4 year old desktop with XP and Kanotix without a problem and am using it on this forum. I tried putting it on my 2 year old Gateway 3520GZ laptop with XP and Kanotix and it whined about the ACPI not being up to date. Excuse me!
Both the desktop and laptop have no problem using ACPI on XP and Kanotix. You would think if anything the problem would be on the older VPR Matrix desktop. As far as I can tell the BIOS is up to date. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Quite a large number of BIOS failed during Vista Beta and RC releases for ACPI support.

Your choice is either to wait for a BIOS upgrade; or use Virtual PC or Virtual Server and its emulated BIOS. (You will need to enable ACPI in the BIOS of the virtual machine --you can get into this by hitting DEL as soon as the virtual machine boots.)

Thanks Bill. I just thought it strange that the older BIOS is acceptable and the newer one is not. I guess I'll have to annoy Gateway!
