Hi,

Has anyone else noticed that Vista has some fundamental performance issues?

I have recently upgraded to a new laptop, I used to have an HP with a AMD Turiom (Single Core), I now have a Fujitsu / Siemens Intel Core 2 Duo, 2Gb Ram and Vista Business.

There are several things which seem to not work properly and I was wondering if anyone else had the same issues and new of any solutions.

Problem 1 - Network
When copying from a network drive, Vista sits there and calculates something, this can take anything from 5-10 minutes and then eventually starts copying slowly at first but speeds up. Never had this issue on XP or Windows 2K. It probably would be quicker for me to walk to the corner shop, by a CD and them come back and burn it from the server!

Problem 2 - IE 7
The Vista version seems to be remarkabley unstable, especially when accessing any "complex" websites. It seems to stop responding at the just go white.

Problem 3 - Multitasking.
This seems ropey. For example cut and paste data from Word to Excel, or Access programs just freeze, they go white and you get the little blue circle.

Finally, does anyone know how to turn off the automatic problem solving thing? Its pretty useless and just wastes time!

Maybe I should go back to XP lol!

I think the reason why VISTA does the calculation first, is to see if the destination has enough room for the data to be copied to...

e.g. XP would copy until it runs out of space and then notify you as to the dilemma...

Have purchased 2 laptops with Vista Home Premium on one and Vista Ultimate on the other. Neither laptop has had one single issue with Vista or IE7.

My newest machine is on Vista Ultimate with 3 gigs of RAM. The only thing I did on this machine was to turn off the swap file all together. The machine actually seems a bit faster now than before although it was never a problem before.

We have no problems transfering files from/to the server or from/to individual machines. Is just as fas as any other machine on our network.

We are very good at keeping everything up to date - patches, driver updates, etc. Don't know if that has any impact on our experiences or not, but either way it's a good thing to do.

We are running Norton anti-virus on one and TrendMicro anti-virus on the other. Both seem to work fine.

Good luck,

If you are having problems with slow copy of files over a network with Vista, or with browsing to some web sites, see this link:

If you make the changes shown before applying SP1 you'll need to do it again afterwards as SP1 turns Vista's advanced networking features back on.
