I am in the process of testing Vista in our environment here at work. We have a Server 2003 domain with XP workstations except for the Vista test box. I am currently redirecting the my documents folder to a network share via GPO. This works perfectly on all XP machines. However, on the vista box when I try to open the documents folder from within an Office application (word, excel, etc) I get an "access denied" message. This is true even if I use the UNC path to get to the redirected documents. If I follow the documents link from the Start Menu or from the shortcut on the desktop I am taken to the share without issue and everything behaves as it should.

In short the redirected documents work perfectly in Vista except when I try to navigate to them in an Office application.

Not a sure solution, but remember that in Vista you are no longer using "C:\Documents and Settings\User1\My Documents" to locate your documents, although it will still show up after an upgrade (Maybe fresh install as well?) This is just for backwards compatability. If you need to access the documents folder, it is now under "C:\Users\User1\". Just be mindful of that, as I know the 'Documents and Settings' will throw an access denied error it sounds like that may be your issue.

The documents are redirected to:
\\fileserver\users\%username%\my documents\
I don't believe this problem has much to do with the change in the user files directory structure.

The first article's suggestion was to ensure that the share permissions are correct. I already have the share permissions set to full control for 'authenticated users'. Also, all of this behaves perfectly on a XP machine, it is only the Vista box that has problems (clean install on the vista box, btw).

also, applications like notepad use the redirected documents folder just fine, it is only Office applications that have the problem

Try disabling your User Access Control (UAC)

I don't remember the steps involved, but you can do a "Help" in Vista and it will walk you thru it.

I looked over the articles suggested and also tried disabling UAC. Unfortunately the problem still exists. It behaves as if the NTFS permissions are not set right, but they must be as I can use the folder completely normally when not in an office product running on vista. In my research I have found other people with the same problem but I have not found anyone who has found a solution yet.

What is the name of the share on your server? I just bought a laptop with Vista Home Prem. on it. I have a small home network and tried to access a drive on my desktop pc using the hidden share (d$ in this case). Got the access denied message. On my desktop pc, I then shared the drive, naming it D. On the laptop I made a network onnection and it works just fine! (Also, on the desktop pc, I granted full permissions to all, fyi).

I wonder what would happen if you deleted the share name on your server,, then re-created it???? Or set up a test share and see how vista acts.

The name of the share is 'Users'. As far as using a test share, all the other shares that are in use behave as they should, so I think I might have a hard time recreating this problem. Also, I don't really want to delete the share as all our users here depend on the share for their relocated documents.

Keep in mind this problem on occurs within office 2003 on a vista machine. The more I think about this, the more I think it is a problem with office and how it handles the new 'documents' folder location, which is compounded by the documents redirection.

I read the article and did exactly what was recommended....no change. Then as a test, on the parent folder I set full control for everyone. Still no change. This problem is beginning to get really frustrating.

The UNC path is as follows \\fileserver\users\<username>\my documents.

The permissions are set as follows:
Users
domain admin, full control, system, full control

<username>
<user>, full control, domain admin, full control, system, full control

my documents
inherited from parent

Again, this setup works for every user on XP/2000 boxes. This does not work on the Vista test box in Office apps. In all other apps it works perfectly.

check these things

registry settings on your xp machines, and the vista machines

HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\current version\shell folders and user shell folders.

verify they are the same on both boxes.

also

check on teh desktop of both machines and right-click properties the my docs and verify they are the same location.

now open your office alications and goto tools \options \ general and look at the "startup" or the "default files location" directories and verify they are the same.

just to verify all settings are being properlly duplicated

then run a gpresult >> output.txt
and verify that there aren't any discprepencies

I checked the redirection path on both boxes, they were the same. The folder redirection is being applied fine on both machines.

What I couldn't find is that registry path on either box. Are you sure that path is correct?

sorry missed one,. i was typing from memory

HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\current version\EXPLORER\shell folders and user shell folders.

hmm,.. try this one

check special permissions for the security

properties for the folder
advanced
edit (for the group or user or whatever)
make sure you have the correct "apply onto" option chosen

this folder, subfolders, and files

make sure you pay attention to what you're doing, you don't want to screw permissions for your users

linney: That problems sounds similar except for the following things. I can open/change/move files in the share if I use explorer. I cannot open the share via an office product.

Weellio, I will check your suggestions shortly.

Thanks

The correct 'apply onto' permissions are set for the user folder.

Also, the registry key 'personal' points to the correct UNC path on both Vista and XP machines.
