Vista Home Premium, on a known good broadband connection, there is little or no connectivity. Windows network Diagnostics states "There is no problem with your internet connection". If I unplug the broadband cable it shows as it does when i plug in the cable, then states Currently connected, Access: local and Internet. I am unable to bring up a web page. I can not find any setting to cause this

Thanks for any help

Have a look at the Winsock Fix in this FAQ, the Netsh command works for Vista too.

WinXP Connectivity Issues
faq779-4625

Clear out you Temporary Internet files, Cookies, History etc.

Try your machine out from "Safe Mode with Networking", and from Normal Mode but as a different user.

Can you Ping any site by name or IP address?

Follow article 6 here back to article 1 links and have a read.

Are you using a software firewall? If so shut it off and try surfing.

if ur running avg antivirus there is a problem with one of the updates, hhtp traffic is blocked, https is running.
theres a fix on the avg page available

thanks all, this is so strange, sometimes large sites with heavy graphics will load quickly but the next try it will not load at all. Sites like Google with few graphics load most every time. I removed Norton which helped a lot with this problem, but still am unable to correct it entierly.

This is a new computer that came with SP1, I have run spyware scans antivirus scans, find nothing, have reset winsock settings, checked internet security settings, nothing seems to help.

I have turned off firewall.
thanks

Just to add, I can ping Google or Ask.com but not Microsoft or Walmart, they just time out

thanks

When you try to open some Web sites on a Windows Vista-based computer, you may experience slow Internet connectivity, and you may receive an error message: "Page could not be displayed"

Have you contacted your ISP for their thoughts on this matter?

linney, it is not my ISP as I have three other computers on the same network and all run just fine. This computer belongs to a 91 year old man, it was working fine but started this, talking to the owner is not fruitful. I really don't want to do a reinstall but if it comes down to it I will.

thanks

Have you tried running IE without add ons and see what the browsing is like then, just in case he has a corrupt add on?

easiestto try..remove the nic from device manager and reinstall

Well, Thanks to all who have been of assistance.
I have tried every suggestion you have given me but to no avail. I have backed up all his files so I can restore them and next I will do a complete new install of Vista. I touched base with the owner today and he indicated when the problem occured there was lightning in the area and he had been gone, so if the reinstall is not the answer, might just be a hardware problem in which case he can contact HP as it is under warranty

I will post my findings

thanks all
