I have a personal laptop that has Vista ultimate. My mistake is used it to connect to my company's network and now I cannot do automatic windows update.

help....thanks

What do you mean by "connect"? Did join it to a Domain and pick up some Group Policies from the Domain?

What error message are you getting?

I VPN to my corporate network. No, my Vista laptop is not part of the domain but someone the IT team pushed down a Group Policy that disabled the auto update. Before I VPN, my laptop auto update works flawlessly

Have you checked the Windows Update settings in your Group Policy?

Look under Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Update, look in both User and Computer Configuration.

You could try System Restore.

Check to see if there is any problem with the Windows Update Service.

Have a look in the Event Viewer.

Try this workaround.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

and find the key named "NoWindowsUpdate" and delete that key. Backup (export) this key first.

You may also need to change the access permissions on this branch:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate

to that of "full access"

Linney, Thanks so much for that registry hack. You DA MAN!

If your machine wasn't part of the network, how was your IT department able to push out a global policy to it?
