Hello,
This newbie wants opinions on what to use for virus protection? I have Norton Systemworks 2002 available.

I would go for Sophos,
Its not cheap, but its one of the few software products that just does what it says on the box,
I have used Sophos for 2 years on our network and found it much better than Norton or McAfee, you can download a trial version at

Agreed. Sophos does exactly what it says on the tin and is the best thats available.

Avoid McAfee like the plauge. Norton always seems to affect apps in a bigger way than it should.

I personally like Norton 2002, it scans sent e mail as well as received and this version seems not to intrude too much, unlike previous Norton products. I am not so keen on systemworks, finding it unwieldy.

Agreed on the systemworks thing. I picked it up thinking it would be beneficial, but I ended up turning off just about everything that comes with it except for antivirus. I could have saved a lot of money with just the A/V software.

I've used many AV's, and I haven't found one to match Sophos. Especially now they have the Enterprise manager!!

Our group of about 30 odd people, mostly doemstic users, previously used InoculateIT. Until recently this was "the best" and had the added advantage of being free to home users. CAI messed up and canned it by making it a commerical product. We now use AVG from Grisoft, which has a small footprint, its virus signature files are updated relatively frequently and it just works, as does so very well. It again comes with the added advantage of being free to home users, although that was not a prime consideration when we were looking for a replacement for InoculateIT.

By comparison, McAfee is too slow, or rather sucks up to much fromt he host computer and NAV has had too many compatibility problem in recent times.

I've been involved with AV for 11 years, and the best to use (in order) are Sophos (superb!!), F-Secure (brill) and Symantec ... Get in touch with a guy called Paulo at Portcullis ..(
Cheers,
Bry
