I installed an industrial software product on my Virtual XP Mode and it automatically created a user with a password (normal for that software - it is not a user meant to be accessed). Prior to this, I has no password to access XP Mode. Now, I have 2 log in options...the new user or "other user". I can't log in on either, and a blank password does not work either. I can't delete the new user because I can't get into XP Mode. If I uninstall the virtual XP, I may lose everything that I already have set up in there. The software prople aren't being much help. Any suggestions appreciated!!

Try contr+alt+del at the XP login screen to bring up the regular login prompt. Then try the Administrator user without a password.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

If you boot into Safe Mode in the Virtual Machine, can you access the built-in Administrator from that Mode and then change or reset your password for your normal user in XP Mode?

To boot into Safe Mode in the VM you will have to disable Integration Features via the VM Settings as a fist step.

These are Help and Support articles from Vista and Windows 7, not much help in your situation, but the first one should be read and understood. Just type the titles into the program's search box.

What are the risks of resetting a password?

What to do if you forget your Windows password?

There are many sites that can help you further with lost or forgotten passwords (Google for instance) but this site for security and ethical reasons does not support that policy. Sorry about that, but if we can help in any other way please try us again.

addendum to the above, on some XP Modes, the administrator is active, and you can log into that account going into safe-mode:

short description on how to:

1. Reboot in to safe mode
2. Log in with the administrator and no password
3. Go into users accounts
4. Create a new admin account with a password.
5. Exit out and reboot in normal mode.
6. Login using your new account name and password.

BigBad...still no luck. It comes up "only XPMUser or an administrator can unlock this computer". Sad part is, I didn't set a password on this...and now there is one. Thanks for the suggestions!!

The F8 button doesn't get me anything different on the startup of XPMode. :(

I don't know much about the VM box except that I can do what little bit I need to on it. While it's starting up, but before booting XP, try leaving your mouse hovered over the VB Window (or even click somewhere in the box) so that it'll associate your computer keyboard with it. If not, there is a shortcut (sorry, don't have VM on this PC and don't know it right off hand) that will associate your keyboard with the Virtual Machine while it's starting up so that F8 will work for you.

See my post earlier on how to get into Safe Mode from a XP Mode VM. You wont get into it if Integration Features are enabled. With those disabled bang away with the F8 key on the black booting screen of the VM.

BigBadBen...you were right. I had to "restart" and then hit F8 to get safe mode, then remove the password and unwanted user from as the Administrator. What I was doing wrong all along was that I was restarting by closing the XP Mode window and restarting from the W7 desktop icon. When you restart that way, F8 doesn't do anything. If you restart from the XPM "action" menu, then F8 will work. Thanks to everyone!!
