Thank you to Dave, and people at BTA (not BT) and seg for your clues, thoughts and so forth...
I found the solution, enable the IP Routing on the LAN side of the HQ router (the same end as the resources that need to be accessed!) and fill in the details as per the fixed ip and mask of the router itself - bingo.
20 minutes telnet no problem. Ping resolves to 2% timeout instead of 15-36%!
