G'day,

My son is still using a computer with Windows 98, he noticed that in my computer with WIN XP, I can right click on a photo/image and I get a choice of what programm do I want to open the image/photo with. His question, and mine to you, id there some type of add-on that would allow him to right click his mouse and be able to select ehat program to open a image/photo, he is at that age that he likes what he has, and don't wanna change, does anyone have a suggestion other than scrapping the relic, it runs perfect for being Win 98, so if there is anything that could be suggested short of a new computer would be deeply appreciated. Have a great weekend.

Cheers Mate,

Basically, Win98 did not have a built in Image viewer like XP has. it used Internet Explorer or Paint to view an image.

However you can download one of the many free image viewers, that have context menu integration. The Context menu is the menu you get when you right click on a file.

To get you started here are a couple of image viewers you could try:

There are also more complex applications out there, but I think they would be overkill.

Any viewer you decide to download wont look exactly like the Previoew from XP, but it should enable him to view images easily.

G'day,

I downloaded both programs, did I misundersatnd, I thought one of them would allow you to use the mouse as with WIN XP, Right Click on a photo that may have been saved to the Desktop, and be offered an option of which Photo Program to Open/View the image, please tell me if I misunderstood this. Between this and My Teenagers problems with My Space.Com and Videos, I want to go back on active duty combat injuries or not, hehehe, just kidding. I so appreciate the advice you folks provide, and "Kudos" to all.

Firt off sorry for taking so long to respond.

Eaither one of the Viewers should have registered the images to them. Right click the image and select Open if preview is not there. It should Open in the image viewer.

G'day,

Thank you for responding again.

It opened in Internet Explorer, is there any way to make Microsoft Photo Editor that came with Office as the default program to open images?

Cheers Mate

It should have registered the types of files to open with it.

You can however associate them manually.

Widows Explorer - View - Folder Options - File Types, Then look for the file type of the image you want to associate, say Jpeg or GIf or BMP, and select Edit t change the progam it uses to Open it.

Alternatively, and i'm not sure it works on al versions of Win98 you can:
Click the file type you want to associate i.e. GIF, hold down the shift key and right click on the file. Choose the Open with option and choose the program you want to run. That should be it. If not repost and I'll have another go.
