Has anybody ever heard of a problem with video files causing the processor usage to immediately go to 100% and lock the system? Seems to happen with all formats (wmv, avi, mov, rm, etc) and all players (Windows Media, Apple Quicktime, Real Realplayer, etc.) I have tried every anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-rootkit software I can find but without success. I have tried uninstalling everything that plays video and then reinstalling, but still not luck. I have Win XP Pro SP2, 933MHz PIII, ATi Radion 7000. Just hoping I don't have to reformat and reinstall. I thought maybe there was a bad codec, but I have no idea how to diagnose or fix such as problem.

Have you tried VLC Media Player; it will play any video file you can throw at it. If that does not work, what about updating the graphics card with the latest driver from ATI.

84terp,
How much Ram do you have installed? How many system processes do you have running? Have you tried
Windows Media Player 11 ?

All,

The problem does not seem to be which player I use. These files used to be playable on the appropriate player (Windows Media, Quicktime, Real, etc.) Now it crashes on ANY wmv or similar file. I have 512MB RAM, 933Mhz PIII, and WinXP SP2. Also, the problem does not seem to be affected by how many processes are running.
