When i start the computer, right when windows reaches the desktop, the screen is only black, and i can only see the mouse pointer. no icons show up, nothing, only the mouse. when i hit alt+ctrl+Del, nothing shows up either. running in Safe mode, i can see everything, except its in 16 colors. when i reboot to make it high color, the blakc screen comes on again. i took out the video card, uninstalled the software. put video card back in, reinstalled drivers, and the sdame thing. The monitor is plug and play, and works with other video cards, on the same motherboard. Its running an AMD Athlon XP 1700

In Windows, do you possibly have the resolution set to high for the monitor ?
How about the refresh rate ?
What happens, in regular Windows, (after setting these in safe mode) when you boot up using,,,,,,,,,,,
800x16 and 256 colors ?
