Hi!

One of my users on a Dell Optiplex GX260 just ran the latest Windows Updates from Microsoft and after rebooting, his PC now reverted to 640x480, 16 colors and we cannot change it back to 1024x768.

When we try to access display properties, whether by right-clicking the desktop or via Control Panel, Windows goes blue screen with a STOP error.

Driver_Unloaded_Without_Canceling_Pending_Operation

VGA.DLL is the file that caused the issue according to the blue screen.

Before I got there, the user already used Add/Remove Programs to remove the latest updates. He did a few other unclear things before I got there in an effort to troubleshoot this.

When I got there, I tried to load the video driver from the Dell driver CD. When that did nothing, I downloaded the driver from Dell.com. That was also to no avail.

Any ideas? Thx!

Can You boot into safe mode?

If you can boot into safe mode and get into Device Manager try to remove the video driver from there, then uninstall the video card from there also. Then reboot and see if Windows picks up the video card. you could then attempt to reinstall the driver from DEll.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

The user actually resolved this himself. He Googled the issue and found that any PC that had pcAnywhere installed experienced this video problem after the last Windows Update. Thus, he removed pcAnywhere and the problem resolved itself. I don't know if he re-applied the Windows Update afterwards.

Thx,
Phil

We just ran into this exact situation at our sister mill. The Tech had installed the patches last week but somehow the user hadn't rebooted until this morning. When she did, her screen was set to the default size. Nothing worked.

The Tech just happended to be here today when she called. He asked me and I remembered reading this thread. He had her remove PCAnywhere and was able to get the screen back to the correct size.

Anyone have a link we can look at for this issue?
