I have got an old HP Vecta VL 350mhz 128mb Pentium II 4gb hard disk computer that I'm trying to clear down to the basics and reinstall Windows 95, I have taken out the video card and want to use the one on the mother board. I'm using the specific Windows 95 cd that came with the HP Vectra VL. It seems to install ok, until it gets to the stage Starting Windows 95 for the first time, then the Plug and Play message appears saying it has found my monitor. This monitor was working fine before I started the rebuild. Then this error message appears and all I can do is switch off....

An exeption OE has occurred at 0028:c0004a64 in vxd, vmm (01)+
0003A64 called from 0028:c00085c4 in vxd vmm (01)+
000075c4. Press any key blah blah blah...........

However it does work while in Safe Mode.

Any ideas anyone????

This is guess. Remove the video driver built into 95 and reload driver from the hp cdrom. Alternate is to change the video driver to the one on the cd without removing the old one.
In any event you have a video driver conflict, probably because the video is using some memory from the system.
Once again this is guess since I've not fought the problem. Ed Fair

The Ideal way to handle this problem would be to know what kind of motherboard this is and look for the utility that sets up the hardware on the motherboard.

I have an IBM Aptiva A40 P133 that has the video on the motherboard and the driver is flashable. Check out the HP site and look for information on your model. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

The problem is definitely a driver problem...firt hint "vxd vmm"..blah..blah. This is a Virtural Device Driver running in the Virtual Memory Manager area. It has wrong driver writen all over it. Look at HP's site (try this link)
You need to know which series it is, then download the drivers you want. Hope this helps ya. GL
