my video card started smoking one day, so i went out and bought a new one.. put it in the slot booted the machine i get nothing... i even tried using an older pci video card.. still nothing so i figured the AGP slot blew out.. so i got another mother board put it all together, started it up and still no video.. I am out of idea's... anyone have some for me!? Something i am missing...

Do you get any beeps? Any lights come on, fans power up? Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Not only do they help you but they may help others.

Could be a bad processor or Bad RAM. Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Not only do they help you but they may help others.

What hardware? Jumpers? Processor?
When a video adapter smokes there are all sorts of possible voltage shorts that can feed back into the processor or into memory. No telling what you may have fried along with the video. Ed Fair

I had a mother board with processor laying around so rule out the processor...

Could it be that the power supply is not kicking out the right amount of voltage?!?!

Anyone have any furthur idea's to add to this..

Was the speaker plugged in? Stupid ? yes, but just want to know. I dont think the power supply will do that. Usually no beeps indicate either BAD CPU (in some cases) or bad Motherboard. If you had one lying around and tried it and nothing. I would suggest 1 more to be sure. Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Actually upon looking at the cpu... there is no internal speaker.

So if it had Post beeps you would not know for you cant here them. Did you try resetting the Video card? Try another? Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Not only do they help you but they may help others.

I have tried everything.,...

new memory
new motherboard
new power supply
three different video cards.
I am about to toss this thing in the lake..

Please don't pollute. That said, to relieve the tension, now is the time to diagnose the problem. That is, if you want to proceed. The first diagnostic tool is a speaker to get post code beeps. Little beasts are cheap, should just about be given away at a good computer shop. Next item is a logic probe. With one, you can see the transitions on the address and data lines on the bios chip. Alternative is to take the system to a shop where they have the stuff available and pay them to do it.
How about taking the system to minimum. M/B, CPU,memory, video, k/b,no jumpers except power on if this is a ATX. No hard drive connections, no floppy connections. No bent pins where the reset switch connects. Trying to eliminate stuck reset or keylock problems.
Verify that the CRT didn't get fried with the video chip fiasco.
What steps did you take to rule out the processor? Ed Fair

I think i am just going to take it somewhere.. Thank you everyone for the advice. This web site is really helpful.

Just out of curiousity.. Did you try reseting the bios before changing anything?
