Until I upgraded to AIX 4.3.3.10 we could vi the inittab file now we have to use chitab etc. or SRC & TCPIP die. Has anyone solved this. I realize why (open file for a split second) but it is really a pain in the "inittab"

never happened to me and i edit /etc/inittab directly all the time. we are mostly at 4.3.3.0-09 and 5.1.0.0-03, however, not sure i ever tried on ML 10. perhaps a `lppchk -v` would reveal something, not sure about the problem but i don't feel it's a version thing. lppchk -v comes back with no problems. This is happening to one of our other rs6000's. These are the only 2 that are now on 4.3.3.10 all the rest are 4.3.3.0-9 and 5.1X

I edit /etc/inittab directly with no problems under ML10.
I suspect that your init has hanging processes, is there any discrepancy between your inittab entries with wait or respawn and the output of 'who -d'?

Syntax, Syntax, Syntax.....
Been there, done that..
When you edit inittab directly you are most likely causing a syntax error!
I killed my SRC by using a semi-colon instead of a colon for a comment.
Post your inittab file and let us have a look.
