I telnet (IBM PERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS) into several different AIX servers from my laptop with Windows 2000. On one of the servers vi has started editing bizarrely. For example, I will use 'i' or 'o' to start inserting text and it will suddenly start copying the line above overlaying what was there. Scrolling down inserts blank lines that don't appear when the file is saved and reopened. I can put my cursor on a line to edit, but when I save and reopen the file find that I edited an entirely different line. and so on. $TERM is VT220, same as for all my server sessions. None of the others sessions have this problem. I have compared options, .profiles, key mappings and can't find anything different that should affect this. Any suggestions?

probably your terminal emulation goes astray.

once you are telnet-ed and logged in, try:
tset -Q \?$TERM

specify vt100 and try this emulation to see if it helps.

Thank you, elspethB for asking this question. I also occasionally have this problem when I telnet into a Sun system, but what is really strange is that sometimes vi acts nuts and sometimes it doesn't. It seems to be worse if I try to resize the DOS window I'm telneting from.

I'll give vgersh99's solution a try the next time it happens.

I never responded to vgersh99's suggestion. I tried it, it worked, everything has been working for a year. Today, had the same problem with a new session and changed the term again. Every thing seems to working fine. Thanks for the help.
