VFP 8 is MUCH better than 6.0. It's more stable, easier to use, has many new features for both the end user and developer. In addition, VFP 6 is no longer supported by Microsoft.
As a VFP trainer, I am obliged always to upgrade, because I have to teach whatever version the client is using. Right now, I have three versions of all my courseware -- for 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0 respectively. This is a pain.
However, for people not in my position, the decision to upgrade is different.
The upgrade from 6.0 to 7.0 was the best upgrade so far for VFP. 7.0 added some extremely useful features. I would always advise a serious VFP developer to use at least 7.0.
In my opinion, the upgrade from 7.0 t 8.0 was less compelling. There were a few useful new features in 8.0, but not nearly as many as in 7.0. However, that's just my personal view -- others will feel differently.
That said, if you are going to go to the trouble and cost of upgrading, you might as well go to the latest version. There is no point in just going to 7.0.
Thanks for all the replies; I greatly appreciate it.
I'm glad to hear VFP 8 is more stable than 6.0, although I didn't have many problems with 6.0 apps crashing or locking up. VFP 5.0 seemed a little less stable, and 3.0 was almost unusable.
Thanks again. It's great to know there's a resource like this around for those of us who are, ummmmmm.... a bit behind the curve.
