This Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit machine yesterday asked me to insert the VFP 9.0 English installation disk out of the blue. VFP was not open at the time. This seems very strange. I was involved in installing a different application at the time. I inserted the requested disk, WTH. What could this possibly mean?

No idea, I only know this behaviour from Office asking for the installation media.

Bye, Olaf.

I've never seen this before. What I have seen is a VFP app that uses an ActiveX control; the app asks for the Office installation disk to be inserted. This has happened during normal operation of the application - not during installation.

Usually it's because the application requires a DLL that is missing. But I've never heard of it asking for anything from VFP.

Perhaps you should consult the people who provided the application you are installing.

I don't remember what I was installing but it had absolutely nothing to do with FoxPro. Strange indeed. I suppose Windows 7 was in a confused state.

In a confused state? Perhaps it was just downloading Windows 10.

Bye, Olaf.

It wants to download Windows 10. I was preparing to do so for a while (I made an installation disk) in the hopes that it would stop the 1-5 minute freezes the machine was having several times a day. I think that running the Intel SSD Optimizer on a regular basis has stopped 95% of the freezes, so I put off Windows 10 installation. I've seen a lot of posts from people complaining about the intrusiveness of Windows 10, the data mining. The only compelling reason for me to install AFAIK is the eventual lack of support for Windows 7, however but that time I may have abandoned this machine which can't support more than 3GB RAM. Anyway, I have many other things to do now.

I have 2 XP machines in the house, 2 Win7 machines, one Win10 machine and a Windows 2000 machine that still comes in useful at times. I also have a Vista Business laptop.

I'm not surprised to hear about that COBOL. I think that FoxPro, though unsupported by MS, will have serious longevity too. Perhaps of a different sort, I don't really know.

We still have a few dozen XP machines in service. Oh, and we're still do some programming in COBOL.

Good for you, Dave. I hate the idea of throwing out a perfectly good tool just because the manufacturer has deemed it to be out of date.

Mike

It just happened again. Last time, I put in the disk and let it do it's thing, whatever that was.

I just logged on, the only thing running was IE and SuperAntiSpyware asking me to download the latest update. VFP was never launched.

I have the following 3x5" popup on my 23" display:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [X]
Visual FoxPro 9.0 Professional - English
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The feature you are trying to use is on a [OK]
CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. [Cancel]

Insert the 'Visual FoxPro 9.0 Professional - English' disk
and click OK.

Use source:
[ ] [Browse...]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This time I click Cancel, and this comes up:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [X]
Visual FoxPro 9.0 Professional - English
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

! Error 1706.No valid source could be found for product
Visual FoxPro 9.0 Professional - English. The Windows
installer cannot continue.

[OK]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I guess maybe I should uninstall VFP and reinstall it???
